11:45:31hugohello
11:46:24hugoI have a question, I have a two PCs, one running Windows Vista and the other running Lubuntu, and I'd like to know if I can make them both play bitfighter on LAN together?
11:46:54hugoDoes bitfighter allow this, a connection between two different PCs with different operating systems?
11:46:56hugothank you.

12:40:07raptoryes, bitfighter is made for LAN multiplayer
12:41:05raptornormally, one of the computers would set up a server. This would open a port (usually at 28000). Any other computer on the same LAN should automatically see it
12:41:41raptorit's important that the server computer must have the port open in its firewall
12:43:12raptorthere's also a 'dedicated' mode where you can start bitfighter in a command line window with a '-dedicated' flag

14:42:29HUG_please will anyone help me install bitfighter on lubuntu 14.04
14:42:45HUG_i have been trying for more than two hours now and this is getting annoying and frustrating

15:34:30watusimotohi HUG_
15:34:34watusimotowhat have you tried?
15:42:09HUG_hello
15:42:24HUG_I have tried installing from the playdeb site
15:42:43HUG_using gdebi package installer
15:42:46HUG_no luck
15:43:04HUG_now im downloading the source code directly from the github site
15:43:20HUG_but the readme file says that I need to have installed some dependencies
15:43:31HUG_all of which I think I only have two so far
15:44:16HUG_I thought this process would be much simpler
15:53:23HUG_please would anyone give me some procedures to install bitfighter onto the lubuntu 14.04 pc
15:53:35HUG_step-by-step procedures
15:53:38HUG_I would greatly appreciate it
15:54:07HUG_why is the source code taking so long to download? its gone more than 20mbs already
15:54:24HUG_the win32 .exe installer was only 11,5 mb
15:54:38HUG_whouldnt this be more simpler to do??

15:55:29bobdaduckHUG???
15:57:16HUG_hello
15:57:26bobdaduck@HUG_ I'm afraid I've not tried running Ubuntu before, so I'm unable to offer support except of the moral/emotional kind
15:57:44HUG_thank you anyways
15:58:33bobdaduckI'm not sure I even know of any player playing on Ubuntu
15:58:51HUG_or any linux distribution?
15:58:56HUG_or any other OS other than windows?
15:59:32HUG_I've got it running perfectly on my windows vista laptop, which is what im currently using
15:59:34bobdaduckWell plenty of apple players
16:00:23HUG_ok the source code finished downloading
16:00:33HUG_apple? ok
16:00:43HUG_Ive got a question:
16:01:01HUG_whenever i enter a server, it automatically takes me into games with bots but no other players
16:01:29HUG_i tried to enter a server that says that there were 127 players playing
16:01:38bobdaduckYes, that is because we have very few players
16:01:47bobdaduckoh, that's the player limit, not the player amount
16:01:54HUG_but when I hit ENTER or click on the server, it automatically starts a match with me alone against bots
16:02:19bobdaduckIf I look at bitfighter.org, the player status widget says there's nobody else online
16:02:23HUG_I don't understand, since there were supposedly 127 players playing
16:02:42bobdaduck127 is the player limit, not the current active players
16:02:52HUG_ooohhhh
16:02:54bobdaduckit probably showed 0 / 127
16:02:55HUG_thank you
16:03:00bobdaduckSorry!
16:03:05HUG_I probabbly didnt notice that
16:03:07HUG_okay
16:03:42bobdaduckI'm afraid I'm at work or I would absolutely get on and play with you
16:03:53bobdaduckThe community's all on facebook and skype and I could probably get a game going
16:04:15HUG_thanks
16:04:42HUG_although im interested in playing against others, im more interested and getting it installed on my other pc so my kids could learn to play LAN style
16:05:07HUG_that's my main interest
16:05:22bobdaduckI made a post from the bitfighter facebook page. Hopefully one of our players uses Linux and sees it and can respond xD
16:06:38HUG_thank you very much
16:06:39HUG_:)
16:07:48bobdaduckIf only RAPTOR were to SOMEHOW hear me TELEPATHICALLY and ninja-smokebomb in to help
16:09:13bobdaduckMost of our devs appear to be in limbo at the moment :)
16:09:38bobdaduckOkay so here's what you do
16:09:41bobdaduckyou get your ubuntu
16:09:53bobdaduckthen make a virtual machine running a pirated copy of windows
16:09:57bobdaduckand I'll walk you through from there
16:10:42KaadmYi have linux
16:10:54KaadmYbut it took me a while to get it compiling
16:12:00HUG_if there were a way to do it without using a "pirated" copy of anything, I'd greatly appreciate it
16:12:34bobdaducklol
16:12:36bobdaduck:)
16:18:18HUG_KaadmY
16:18:43HUG_I'd greatly appreciate if you could provide some guidance for me in installing on Ubuntu
16:21:33KaadmYHUG_: do you have the source from https://github.com/bitfighter/bitfighter?
16:21:41HUG_Yes I have
16:21:49HUG_I'm installing openall right now
16:21:54HUG_using apt-get install
16:21:58KaadmYok
16:22:50KaadmYdo you have cmake, make, gcc, as well as the -dev libs for the required libs?
16:22:50HUG_now im going to try to get "libvorbix"
16:22:54Flynnn has joined
16:22:54KaadmYlibvorbis*
16:23:04KaadmYyou need the -dev versions of all the libs
16:23:12HUG_i dont think I have any of those you mentiones
16:23:15KaadmYie. `apt-get install libvorbos libvorbis-dev`
16:23:22KaadmYlibvorbis*
16:23:24HUG_instead of make I think i have another builder, one I used to install MAME
16:23:27HUG_called Scons
16:23:32KaadmYthat won't work
16:23:39KaadmYbitfighter requires make
16:23:43HUG_ok
16:23:48HUG_so many requirements
16:23:53KaadmYnot too many really :)
16:24:04KaadmYyou should only need to install most of these libs once
16:24:12HUG_ok
16:24:13KaadmYmost games use similar libs
16:24:20HUG_I hope they areny too big in size
16:24:30HUG_well, luckily openal was less than 1 mb
16:24:59KaadmYyea
16:25:15KaadmYlibs are usually pretty small
16:25:50HUG_man can I ask you soemthing
16:25:57HUG_for example, when i tried to install openal
16:26:21HUG_i put "sudo apt-get install openal"... so it gave me an error
16:26:50HUG_until I typed "sudo apt-get install libopenall-dev"
16:27:17KaadmYyes
16:27:20HUG_so i knew i had to install "openal" but i didnt know that I had to type it liek this: "libopenal-dev"
16:27:21KaadmYhmm
16:27:26HUG_is there any search function?
16:27:31HUG_search command?
16:27:31KaadmYpress the tab key
16:27:34KaadmYit autocompletes libs
16:27:41KaadmY(takes a bit of time to find)
16:27:43HUG_oh really?
16:27:53KaadmYie `sudo apt-get install libvor` then press tab
16:28:08KaadmYit'll use the closest one it can find, or print a list of possible matches
16:28:25KaadmYand (without sudo) `apt-file find <file>`
16:28:37HUG_oh jees, i just tried it and yeah it worked
16:28:38KaadmYwhere <file> can be a file inside any package
16:28:42HUG_thank you!
16:29:09KaadmYie. `apt-file find "vorbisfile.h"` will print "libvorbis-dev: /usr/include/vorbis/vorbisfile.h"
16:29:24KaadmYso you know which package the file is in
16:30:22HUG_oh i needed to know that too! thank you!
16:30:29HUG_im totally new to ubuntu
16:30:30KaadmYyw :)
16:30:40KaadmYi've only used linux for anything "real"
16:30:45HUG_i had this old pc just accumulating dust
16:30:59KaadmYused windows for a year or so(years ago), and hated it :P
16:31:06HUG_so now i want it to serve for atleast as some arcade low-spec gaming centre for my kids
16:31:12KaadmYheh
16:31:19KaadmYyou might want to try doom then
16:31:31KaadmY(unless you don't want violence :)
16:31:43HUG_i know doom, the thing is im trying to avoid certain types of genres
16:31:46HUG_if you know what i mean
16:31:51KaadmYie. violence, i'm guessing?
16:31:57HUG_violence, demons, horror, whatnot
16:32:02KaadmYcould try bzflag
16:32:13KaadmYno violence, low specs to run, fun
16:32:17HUG_never heard of it
16:32:22HUG_i'll look intoit
16:32:28KaadmYhttp://bzflag.org/
16:32:34HUG_awesome, thanks alot for the info
16:32:38KaadmYnp
16:32:50KaadmYcouple other games, too
16:33:11KaadmYMinetest is one(similar to minecraft), it's a sandbox building game
16:33:14bobdaduckbitfighter's definitely the best though
16:33:44KaadmYhttp://www.minetest.net/
16:33:45KaadmYyea
16:33:49KaadmYthey're all fun games :P
16:34:08KaadmYminetest has unfortunately gotten too slow for me to play at good fps though in the last release
16:34:30HUG_if its slow for you, than its definately slower for me
16:34:57KaadmYi have a craptop
16:35:02HUG_my old pc is an AMD Duron 1.7 GHZ with 20GB hard drive and 386 RAM memory
16:35:03KaadmYabout 15 years old, barely has opengl
16:35:08KaadmYah
16:35:13KaadmYyour machine sounds slower :P
16:35:25HUG_actually, im not in the US
16:35:30HUG_im in Argentina, South America
16:35:43HUG_my mother bought that PC in 2004
16:35:56HUG_it was to run as a server for a cybercafe back then
16:36:00KaadmYi got this laptop for free :)
16:36:04KaadmYit was broken
16:36:11HUG_awesome, heh
16:36:16HUG_oh you fixed it? awesome deal
16:36:21KaadmYthe guy i got it from was using it besides a spa >.<
16:36:30KaadmYsome metal on here is all corroded
16:36:41KaadmYand the plastic is a bit bent up from heat
16:36:41HUG_lol
16:36:46KaadmYbut, it works
16:37:07HUG_dude you're using a rusted laptop?
16:37:11HUG_how's that possible.. lol
16:37:20bobdaduckrofl
16:37:27KaadmYnot really ruster perse
16:37:30KaadmYrusted*
16:37:50KaadmYstuff like the security lock thing for locking your laptop is corroded a bit
16:38:00KaadmYand some plasic trim on the display is warped
16:38:00HUG_oh yeah
16:38:13HUG_i see
16:38:58KaadmYwhatever though :)
16:39:07KaadmYi *thought* i was helping you install bitfighter :P
16:39:51bobdaduckSURPIRSE
16:40:09HUG_im getting libvorbis
16:40:20HUG_done
16:40:23HUG_next...
16:40:34HUG_llibspeex
16:40:43KaadmYlibspeex isn't really required
16:40:48KaadmYit's for voice chat ingame
16:40:51KaadmYyes, it has that
16:41:01KaadmYiirc you can disable it, forget how though
16:41:41HUG_oh i c
16:42:08KaadmYprobably simpler to install though
16:42:14HUG_what does "-dev" stand for?
16:42:21KaadmY-dev means the include files
16:42:30KaadmYyou need them to compile stuff that uses the libraries
16:43:02HUG_ok
16:43:03HUG_ok i have a question: the first dependency listed at bitfighter README is "SDL"
16:43:11HUG_i think i installed this already for MAME
16:43:22KaadmYshouldn't need to reinstall then
16:43:23HUG_how do i found out?
16:43:28HUG_ok
16:43:44HUG_now i need cmake
16:44:07KaadmYrun `/sbin/ldconfig -p | grep libSDL` to check if sdl exists
16:44:18HUG_16,5mb downloading
16:44:23KaadmYthe `/sbin/ldconfig -p` prints a list of installed libraries
16:44:28KaadmYcmake is probably pretty big
16:45:02KaadmYit has tons of templates for compiling
16:45:05KaadmYiirc
16:45:12HUG_what is iirc?
16:45:37HUG_ok its done
16:45:50KaadmYiirc=if i remember correctly
16:46:06HUG_sorry, it wasnt 16mb, it was only 3,3mb
16:46:10KaadmYah
16:46:23HUG_it told me that i needed atleast 16mb of free space
16:46:35HUG_ok,, now whats next?
16:46:49KaadmYlibmobplug
16:47:10KaadmY`sudo apt-get install libmodplug libmodplug-dev` should work
16:47:12HUG_done already
16:47:15KaadmYok
16:47:25KaadmYnow if the libs are installed correctly
16:47:29KaadmYyou can compile
16:47:38KaadmYdo you have gcc and g++?
16:47:53HUG_no
16:48:25KaadmYyou'll need those to actually compile anything
16:48:33KaadmY`sudo apt-get install build-essential`
16:48:46HUG_it says i already have gcc
16:48:47KaadmYthat should include gcc/g++
16:48:49KaadmYok
16:48:53KaadmYrun the "gcc" command
16:49:11HUG_from the bitfighter directory?
16:49:22KaadmYshould give:
16:49:22KaadmYgcc: fatal error: no input files
16:49:22KaadmYcompilation terminated.
16:49:31KaadmYnot in the bitfighter dir yet
16:49:32HUG_yes
16:49:34HUG_it did exactly that
16:49:53KaadmYin the bitfighter directory(the one you downloaded/cloned from git), run `cd build`
16:50:02HUG_ok
16:50:13KaadmYdid that work?
16:50:41HUG_yes
16:50:47HUG_it moved to a "build" folder
16:50:50KaadmYok
16:50:53KaadmYnow type `cmake ..`
16:51:05KaadmYthat runs cmake with the build files from the previous directory
16:51:17KaadmYthat might take a while, might also be missing libs
16:51:49HUG_its working (my adrenaline is pumping)...
16:51:54HUG_!!!

16:53:07KaadmYwhat's the error?
16:53:16KaadmYi assume missing libs?
16:53:35HUG_it tells me to see the smakeoutput.log file
16:53:46KaadmYah yes
16:53:48HUG_and cmakeerror.log
16:53:56KaadmYprobably missing libs
16:54:10KaadmYcan i see the last few lines of the console output from cmake?
16:54:40HUG_hmm. how do i copy that from the other pc to this chat?..
16:55:16KaadmYselect a region(mouse drag), press Ctrl+Shift+C, then paste into here by pressing Ctrl+V
16:55:22HUG_"Could NOT find PhysFS"
16:55:25KaadmYah

16:56:13KaadmY`apt-get install libphysfs1 libphysfs-dev`
16:56:17KaadmYwith sudo probably
16:56:28KaadmYthen run `cmake ..` again

17:03:30KaadmYmake will probably be running for a while

17:03:36KaadmYprobably upwards of 5 minutes iirc
17:03:41KaadmYyep
17:03:53KaadmYi think bitfighter is mostly C++

17:06:28KaadmYcmake checks to see if all the libraries exist
17:06:31HUG_i mean, code
17:06:49HUG_so its like a step before compiling
17:06:55KaadmYyes
17:07:00HUG_ok
17:07:06KaadmYit find the libraries with the correct versions etc

18:03:13watusimotoHi HUG_ -- sorry I left for a meeting, and just got back
18:03:48watusimotosource is ALWAYS much larger than compiled programs, and a repo has several copies of different versions of the source, so it's bigger yet
18:04:31watusimotoI've seen BF running on Ubuntu, and I've installed it (recently) for Mint, which is basically the same
18:05:44watusimotoI did not have to compile.
18:06:29watusimotoI think I downloaded the debian package and installed from there
18:07:56watusimotoThe Linux standalone package should work (just unzip and play), but that's not what I did
18:08:10watusimotowhat happened with you tried the debian packages?
18:09:21HUG_i had issues with the gdebi package installer
18:09:24HUG_no response
18:09:36HUG_and couldnt manage to install gdeb1
18:09:46HUG_but my installation process from source is 100% now
18:09:56watusimotoit's working?
18:10:03KaadmYHUG_: is the compile finished?
18:10:18HUG_"linking CXX executable ....."100% built target bitfighter"
18:10:23HUG_yes

18:10:32watusimotoI know I did not use gdebi to install the packages, because I've never heard of that before :-)
18:10:33KaadmYokay
18:11:07KaadmYHUG_: tried these yet? http://bitfighter.org/files/distro/debian_8/
18:11:15watusimotofor what it's worth, my kids have played bitfighter for years, and one still actively uses it to build levels, though he doesn't play them much. It's a great game for kids.
18:12:01HUG_havent tried those yet
18:12:19HUG_but since my comilation is finished? arent I done?
18:13:08watusimotoyes, probably
18:13:39HUG_what do i have to do to launch the game now?
18:13:43HUG_lol
18:14:03watusimotoYou might need to move some files around, but you can try running "bitfighter" from your compile folder.
18:14:16watusimotoi.e. the folder where the compiler built the file
18:14:27KaadmYi think it's put in exe/ for bitfighter?
18:14:32KaadmYor build/exe/?
18:14:33watusimotoyes
18:14:36watusimotoprobably there
18:14:39watusimoto(one of those)
18:14:56watusimotoIt might fail on startup due to missing resources (fonts, music, etc.)
18:15:11KaadmY"After running 'make', the bitfighter executable is put into the directory 'exe/'. Copy everything from the 'resources/' directory into the 'exe/' directory, keeping the folders intact (like sfx, scripts, etc.). Bitfighter can now be run from the 'exe/' folder."
18:15:13watusimotobut that's easy enough to resolve
18:15:25watusimotoKaadmY: :-)
18:15:43HUG_i cant find the folder
18:16:01KaadmYHUG_: which folder?
18:16:07HUG_i mean.. it says "Linking CXX executable ../../exe/bitfighter"
18:16:22HUG_but how do i know the entire path?
18:16:27KaadmYthat path is relative to the compiled file
18:16:44KaadmYthe binary is probably somewhere in <bitfighter root>/build/exe/
18:16:59HUG_found it
18:17:18KaadmYif you run it, there'll probably a couple warnings about missing sounds of something
18:18:03HUG_waiting...
18:18:50HUG_i hit "execute" and nothing happens... atleast yet
18:18:56HUG_unless its loading
18:19:09watusimotois there a log file?
18:19:13HUG_no
18:19:14watusimotobitfighter.log, probably?
18:19:18HUG_just an executable
18:19:22watusimotothen it isn't starting at all
18:19:25HUG_"bitfighter" (executable)
18:19:35KaadmYHUG_: from the command line or a file manager?
18:19:39watusimotoone of the first things that happens is the game creates a log file
18:19:54HUG_file manager
18:20:17KaadmYHUG_: can you run from a command line?
18:20:33HUG_how?
18:20:52HUG_once in in the directory.. how do i run the exe file?
18:20:58KaadmY./bitfighter
18:21:00watusimoto./bitfighter
18:22:12HUG_"Error configuring Lua interpreter: Error compiling script ../../scripts/lua_helper_functions.lua: No such file or directory" "Could not start Lua interpreter; Exiting."
18:22:22watusimotoProgress!
18:22:46HUG_lol
18:23:03KaadmYwell, it really is progress :)
18:23:08watusimotoyou need all your resource folders, including the scripts folder, sfx, levels, etc.
18:23:10HUG_ok
18:23:31HUG_wasnt all that included in the source code download?
18:23:38KaadmYHUG_: yes
18:23:42watusimotoBF uses Lua for scripting levels, bot, and plugins
18:23:44KaadmYyou need to move them around though
18:23:52HUG_oh i see
18:25:08HUG_was ther anyway i would know this without your help?
18:25:13HUG_i esteem not.. hehe
18:25:23KaadmYHUG_: it's in the compile instructions :P
18:25:23HUG_anyways.. where to go from here?
18:25:28HUG_oh ok
18:25:38HUG_let me take a look
18:26:00KaadmYin the bitfighter main folder, there should be a folder called "resources"
18:26:04watusimotoinstalling from the packages would have been easier :-)
18:26:10HUG_oh found it
18:26:33KaadmYHUG_: go to the same folder as the `resources` folder
18:26:38KaadmYfrom a command line
18:26:53KaadmYthen run `cp -r resources build/exe`
18:26:53watusimotoI think I did that with apt-get install on mint
18:27:15HUG_i copied with right click copy and paste
18:27:31KaadmYHUG_: ok
18:27:31HUG_cp command is copy right?
18:27:35KaadmYyes
18:27:42HUG_what's "-r"?
18:27:49KaadmY"-r" copies recursively
18:28:00KaadmYnormally, cp just copies the file(s) you give it
18:28:02KaadmYe
18:28:04HUG_for whatever that means.. i'll find it out later.. hehe
18:28:08KaadmY:P
18:28:17KaadmYyou need it to copy folders in general
18:28:30HUG_now lets run the baby up!!!
18:29:08HUG_double clikc on exe file... "execute"... and ...
18:29:09HUG_...
18:29:12HUG_...
18:29:22HUG_...
18:30:01HUG_nothing..
18:30:29HUG_i''l try from terminal
18:30:43HUG_same Lua interpreter error
18:30:57HUG_whats wrong?
18:31:30HUG_maybe it didnt copy some hidden files or folders??
18:32:13KaadmYahh
18:32:31KaadmYfrom a terminal
18:32:40KaadmYgo inside the `resources` folder
18:32:43watusimotocan you do an ls on folder above where bitfighter executable is?
18:32:54KaadmYthen run `../bitfighter`
18:33:04KaadmYthat should work
18:33:07watusimotoKaadmY: good idea
18:33:10KaadmYunless i missed something
18:33:18watusimotoI'm going to shut up for a few minutes
18:33:34KaadmY:P
18:33:39KaadmYwatusimoto: good idea
18:33:43KaadmY:D
18:34:02HUG_bash: "No existe el archivo o el directorio" which means (The file or directory doesnt exist")
18:34:19HUG_im in the resource directory
18:34:29KaadmYyou have to do "../bitfighter"
18:34:34KaadmYnot "./bitfighter"
18:35:55HUG_i did
18:36:15HUG_maybe i should reboot the pc and try again?
18:36:25KaadmYno
18:36:25HUG_should this type of thing happen?
18:36:34KaadmYrebooting won't make a difference
18:36:39HUG_ok
18:36:46HUG_its not windows, right? hehe
18:36:56HUG_it gives me same bash error
18:37:18HUG_the ".." makes it go back one directory right?
18:37:23KaadmYyes
18:37:39HUG_i mean.. if thats true.. that would be wrong since the bitfighter directory is in a folder named "exe"
18:37:48KaadmYyes
18:37:51HUG_and resource isnt in that folder
18:38:02HUG_exe and resource are in the same mother folder
18:38:19KaadmYpretty sure the folders are wrong atm
18:38:26HUG_or "master"
18:38:47KaadmYyou should be in the folder '<bitfighter root>/build/exe/resources/'
18:38:54KaadmYthen from there run '.../bitfighter'
18:39:01KaadmY"../bitfighter"
18:39:14HUG_ohhhh wait
18:39:32HUG_i had to copy the entire resource folder and not just copy the contents of the folder?
18:39:41KaadmYi think just the contents
18:40:06HUG_the mother folder is "bitfighter-master"
18:40:11KaadmYyes
18:40:13KaadmYcorrect
18:40:14HUG_in that folder theres the "exe" folder
18:40:17KaadmYyes
18:40:18HUG_and the "resource" folder
18:40:33KaadmYso "<master>/exe/resources" ?
18:40:41HUG_no
18:40:44HUG_no such folder
18:41:02HUG_i copied just the contents of the resource folder into the exe folder
18:41:16watusimotois there an exe/scripts flder?
18:41:22HUG_yes
18:41:29watusimotoI think that's right
18:41:48KaadmYfor me, it's just exe/ and some files
18:41:52KaadmYno dirs there
18:42:03KaadmYah nvm
18:42:13KaadmYi didn't understand what watusimoto just said :)
18:42:41watusimotoThis is what my windows layout looks like... it should be similar in linux
18:42:42watusimotohttps://imgur.com/uRKB1mY
18:43:22watusimotoI think your exe folder should look like this, but with linuxy files
18:43:48HUG_its similar
18:43:57HUG_but my exe folder has much less files
18:44:04watusimotoyes, that's fine
18:44:06HUG_no "updater" folder
18:44:18watusimotothat;s fine too
18:44:25HUG_no dlls
18:44:35watusimotothe scripts folder is the one bitfighter is choking on
18:44:50watusimotoyou have files in the scripts folder?
18:44:58watusimoto(13 or so?)
18:44:58HUG_yes
18:45:03HUG_including that lua interpreter
18:45:16HUG_13
18:45:44HUG_i mean.. "lue_helper_functions.lua" included
18:45:59watusimotook
18:46:03HUG_thats the file that supposedly is missing
18:46:12watusimotoso... the error message you showed earlier was:
18:46:12watusimotoError configuring Lua interpreter: Error compiling script ../../scripts/lua_helper_functions.lua: No such file or directory" "Could not start Lua interpreter; Exiting.
18:46:36watusimotoyou are running from the exe folder, but it is looking for scripts in ../../scripts instead of scripts
18:46:39HUG_yea.. i summed up the path though with the "../.."
18:46:50watusimotoah, ok
18:47:02watusimotocan you show me the full error message?
18:48:00HUG_Error configuring Lua interpreter: Error compiling script /home/hugo/.bitfighter/scripts/lua_helper_functions.lua: No such file or directory" "Could not start Lua interpreter; Exiting.
18:48:09HUG_i get it now
18:48:14HUG_i see the problem.. i think
18:48:14watusimoto!!!!
18:48:16HUG_its the path
18:48:18watusimotoyes
18:48:19watusimotook
18:48:24watusimotoI think I understand
18:48:39watusimotoso the game actually looks for files first in your home folder
18:48:48watusimotothis is handled when you install from a package
18:49:02watusimotoso create a .bitfighter folder in /home/hugo
18:49:11HUG_okk
18:49:15watusimotoand copy the scripts folder (and the others) there
18:49:18HUG_i get it
18:49:24watusimotoand let's see if that does it
18:49:38HUG_you mean i copy all the contents of the exe folder?
18:49:44watusimotothe idea is that you can have one bitfighter install, but different users can have different files associated with them
18:49:45watusimotono
18:50:02watusimotothe fonts, levels, music, robots, scripts, sfx, and editor_plugins folders
18:50:23watusimotoso you have /home/hugo/.bitfighter/scripts, etc.
18:50:27HUG_testing folder too?
18:50:39watusimotooptional
18:50:43HUG_ok
18:50:47watusimotono, you won't need it
18:50:56HUG_that would be every folder but testing folder
18:51:01watusimotoyes
18:51:02HUG_from the exe folder
18:51:07watusimotoyes
18:51:59HUG_i cant create it from the file manager
18:52:09HUG_it says that the file already exists
18:52:10bobdaduck Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
18:52:37HUG_when i try to create the folder name ".bitfighter"
18:52:56HUG_do i try creating the folder from terminal?
18:54:22HUG_mkdir?
18:54:51watusimotomaybe the folder already exists! Folders starting with "." are invisible by default
18:55:33HUG_you're right, its there
18:55:54HUG_hey, it already has the folders
18:56:03HUG_but the script folder is empty
18:56:15HUG_lol this is craziness
18:56:39watusimotoit may be that BF tried to create the folders when it first ran
18:56:44HUG_let me just paste on top of everything
18:56:48watusimotoyou are definitely doing this the hard way!
18:56:56watusimotobut you're in the home stretch!
18:57:13HUG_ok done
18:57:30watusimotois it late where you aer?
18:57:50HUG_nah, its 20:00hs
18:58:32HUG_woopie!! its running!!
18:59:13HUG_:DDDD
19:00:59HUG_aw man i think i have to configure some network configuration or something
19:01:01KaadmYHUG_: join the server with players or -1 players
19:01:09HUG_because it shoes "no games online"
19:01:33HUG_"There are currently no games online. Why dont you host one?"
19:02:20watusimotoare you hug0?
19:02:30HUG_yes
19:02:31watusimotoif so, I see you are connected to the master server
19:02:35HUG_and the other is "marcos"
19:02:38HUG_my other pc is "marcos"
19:02:47watusimoto(and Zemmer is my son :-)
19:02:53watusimotohe's also online
19:02:58KaadmYi'm playing with Zemmer :P
19:03:02HUG_ok
19:03:06watusimotoha!!!
19:03:08HUG_do you guys see "marcos?"
19:03:17watusimotoI see marcos online as well
19:03:27HUG_it says "SERVERS: 0"
19:03:28watusimotook, try hosting a game, and I'll see if it shows up
19:03:42HUG_hosting from "marcos"?
19:03:46watusimotosure
19:04:00HUG_you wont hack me right? lol
19:04:05HUG_it started
19:04:16watusimotook, I see there are now 6 servers online
19:04:28watusimotoso your machine is able to connect to the master server, on some level
19:04:38watusimotonow why don't you see the other 5?
19:04:45watusimotocan you see your marcos server from hugo?
19:05:03watusimoto(it would be very hard to hack your server using bitfighter as a vehicle!)
19:05:26HUG_i see a "pinged time out"
19:06:10watusimotoOk... I'm guessing there is a firewall issue somewhere
19:06:30KaadmYsomeone's playing called "hog0"
19:06:30watusimotois there a firewall between your two servers? Or are they both on your home network?
19:06:35KaadmYhug0 i mean
19:06:44KaadmYor hugO
19:06:47HUG_thats me
19:06:59watusimoto(you can see this on the bitfighter.org home page)
19:07:06HUG_no network
19:07:24HUG_i mean.. our PCs arent linked as a LAN
19:07:37watusimotook, so they're essentially using the internet as a lan
19:08:35HUG_yeah
19:08:47HUG_i guess its my only option for now
19:08:53watusimotoI'm on your server, I think
19:09:03HUG_i dont know how to link the two PCs since they are two different OS
19:09:10watusimotothat's fine
19:09:21watusimotoit shouldn't amtter.... I'm just trying to understand the situation
19:09:51watusimotowhat OS is Hug0 on?
19:09:58HUG_wait a sec
19:10:07HUG_"marcos" is running a different version
19:10:11HUG_its 020 version
19:10:15watusimotoah... ok
19:10:18watusimotothat's the problem
19:10:19HUG_and "hug0" is running 019e
19:10:22watusimotook
19:10:25watusimotoI understand
19:10:49HUG_and there no sound on the 020 version
19:10:52watusimotoevery major version change (019->020) breaks the protocol, and the versions are incompatible
19:10:58HUG_atleast i dont think my speakers are wrong
19:11:00watusimoto020 is not released
19:11:06watusimotoit is broken in so many ways
19:11:12HUG_i see
19:11:12watusimoto019e is what you want
19:11:19watusimotoso
19:11:20watusimotook
19:11:23HUG_so..
19:11:29watusimotoyou installed 020 from source, no?
19:11:46HUG_yes
19:11:49watusimotoand 019e from the website on win or mac?
19:11:52watusimotook
19:11:56HUG_win
19:11:59watusimotoso... all that work was for not
19:12:22HUG_"hug0" is the account im using on my actual laptop.. the one im using to chat right now with you guys.. and its windows vista
19:12:30watusimotolet's go back to the .deb files, and see if you can install them via apt-get
19:12:48watusimotothe alternative is to download the 019e source, and rebuild that
19:13:05HUG_the 019e isnt included in the 020 source download?
19:13:17HUG_its a whole different source?
19:13:17watusimotowhere did you download from?
19:13:29HUG_github website
19:13:39HUG_that was posted on the bitfighter website
19:13:52watusimotoyou downloaded the latest source
19:14:12watusimoto(which is what people generally want)
19:14:25HUG_if its not ready.. maybe they shouldnt post it publically yet?? or is it beta testing?
19:14:30watusimotoon the github site, you need to select the bitfighter-019e source
19:14:51watusimotoUnder the branch: dropdown, select tags, and 019e
19:15:08HUG_ok.. if i dont the 020 source.. i'de like to delete it all first to free up space
19:15:23watusimotomost people don't try to build this from source, or they'll grab the source archive we provide on the website
19:15:36watusimotoyou are doing this the aboslute most difficult way :-)
19:15:41HUG_but before downloading the 019e source.. maybe i could try the other install methods you guys suggested earlier
19:15:46watusimotoyes
19:15:58watusimotolet me show you the right source, first
19:16:11watusimotoactually, you can just download the correct source on the bf downloads page
19:16:20watusimotoin any event...
19:16:40watusimotograb the amd64 file from here:
19:16:40watusimotohttp://bitfighter.org/files/distro/debian_8/
19:16:53watusimoto(assuming you hae a 64 bit computer)
19:17:29HUG_no, its 32 bit.. its an ollllddd PC
19:17:35watusimotook, then grab the other one
19:17:40HUG_AMD Duron 1,7 GHZ, 386 RAM
19:17:45watusimotobitfighter works well on onld computers
19:17:48HUG_20GB Hard disk
19:17:52watusimotowow
19:17:56watusimotoyou're pushing it
19:18:30HUG_do i open with or do i save in downloads folder?
19:19:00HUG_im using Lubuntu 14.04
19:19:03HUG_as OS
19:19:13HUG_freshly installed days ago
19:19:35watusimotoput the file somewhere, perhaps /tmp
19:19:38watusimotoand use this:
19:19:39watusimotosudo dpkg -i DEB_PACKAGE
19:19:39HUG_hoping to give some use to this old PC that was just accumulating dust hidden somewhere in my house
19:20:09watusimotoThough at this point, I'm just following these instructions:
19:20:10watusimotohttps://askubuntu.com/questions/40779/how-do-i-install-a-deb-file-via-the-command-line
19:20:13HUG_is /tmp and existing folder or do i have to create it?
19:20:20watusimotoit should exist
19:20:33watusimotoopen a terminal and do ls /
19:20:36watusimotoyou should see it there
19:20:42HUG_ok i'll give that a try
19:20:54HUG_im downloading to the Downloads folder
19:21:27HUG_done
19:23:19HUG_working.... unpacking....
19:23:27HUG_errors...
19:24:08HUG_ok seems that i need a newer version of a certain library
19:24:41HUG_libstdc++6... i have 4.8.4
19:25:23KaadmYHUG_: try http://bitfighter.org/files/bitfighter-019e-linux-standalone.tar.gz
19:25:31KaadmYthat works perfectly for me
19:25:36KaadmYdownload, untar, run
19:26:00HUG_ok lets see
19:26:56HUG_downloading
19:36:36HUG_success
19:37:00HUG_!!!!!!!! :DDD

19:45:55HUG_hey guys.. it works on the Lubuntu PC.. its just a bit slow
19:46:04HUG_any work around for this?
19:46:10KaadmYHUG_: probably not :/
19:46:12HUG_i mean... just a bit
19:46:35HUG_and if i add some more RAM memory to the PC?
19:46:43KaadmYprobably just a slow cpu
19:46:43HUG_cuz i was planning on adding some anyway
19:46:55KaadmYram probably won't change performance much
19:47:02KaadmYbitfighter shouldn't use *that* much mem
19:47:15watusimotoworkaround for slow?
19:47:15HUG_cuz the motherboard takes 1GB of RAM.. but it only has 386 MB right now
19:47:46HUG_yeah... i mean... it works fine.. just a bit slow..
19:47:52watusimotofaster computer :-)
19:47:55watusimotohow slow is it
19:48:02KaadmY1.7ghz iirc
19:48:04watusimotopress F6 in game and see what your FPS is
19:48:08KaadmYforget how many cores
19:48:11HUG_ok
19:48:15KaadmYAMD Duron 1,7 GHZ, 386 RAM
19:48:52KaadmYi have 2 core 1.2ghz intel
19:49:02HUG_5 fps
19:49:07KaadmYyea
19:49:10KaadmYthat *is* slow
19:49:12watusimotook... it's probably your graphics card
19:49:15HUG_7 fps
19:49:24watusimotoyou can get similar framerates on a raspberry pi
19:49:26HUG_4, 5 , 7 fps
19:49:27KaadmYi have intel integrated, bitfighter runs smooth
19:50:03HUG_graphics card? ok
19:50:07watusimotoI think you'll find if you were to host a game (without the gui, from the cmd line), it would perform quite well. It's the graphics that are the problem
19:50:12watusimotothat's my guess
19:50:35HUG_maybe i should have ubuntu search for the latest drivers for the graphics card?
19:50:39HUG_its onboard
19:50:41watusimotosure
19:50:53HUG_i'll give that a try later on
19:51:17HUG_and a cheap video card would help right?
19:51:27watusimotobut if it's really old, it may just not have the right command set to run bf (or any other modernish game) well
19:51:31watusimotoprobably yes
19:51:49watusimotoyou'd need to find one that worked with your computer
19:51:52watusimotomaybe a used one
19:53:03HUG_the motherboard it has 2 empty PCI slots and a slot of the older technology before PCI
19:53:24watusimotoif you were here in my town, I could get you a graphics card for about $10
19:53:39watusimotowe have a great computer salvage organization

21:22:11HUG_so back to my video card issue
21:22:25HUG_this is what the manual of my motherboard says: "This mainboard has an AMD Duron Processor. This mainboard uses the SiS730S chipset that integrates a 128-bit AGP Graphics Accelerator, and provides an optional 2X/4X AGP slot for highly graphics display, the CPU Plug & Play through firmware, Ultra DMA 33/66/100 function."
21:22:46HUG_and i was incorrect about the processor. i sad it was 1.7GHZ, its only 1.26GHZ
21:23:13HUG_but i still esteem its the video card issue and not the processor the problem
21:24:17HUG_also, i'd like to remove everything from the 020 version install of bitfighter, to free that space on disk
21:37:49HUG_the manual also states this regarding the video card: Notice for AGP4X Slot: This mainboard provides an optional AGP4x slot. We recommend the user should use one of the AGP VGA cards that we have tested. We will test more AGP VGA cards in the future.
