Is advertisement a good idea or is it too expensive to have more players?
When I say advertisement I am talking about a facebook page or twitter. (Or maybe even google or small Facebook advertisement (you know the ones on the side of the facebook page) if you're up for it).

Re: Advertisement?

Unless you want to get one of those 'free car wash' signs and replace that with bitfighter and wave it around on the street looking like a dork, then we don't have any legitimate means of advertisement.

Well in the "Get involved" page, it says about ideas how to promote the game. Why not use free advertisment?

Re: Advertisement?

Have the developers even tried talking to the garage games people about the rights to the original source of zap? I doubt they would have a problem with giving it away considering they dropped the game years ago. If we got that it would no longer have to be non-profit only.

Re: Advertisement?

It's complicated. Basically, we've licensed the code from GarageGames, and can do what we want as long as we comply with the terms of the license. That license is the GPL, which you can read about elsewhere.

As long as we don't violate that license, we are free to do what we want.

Re: Advertisement?

What you need is to put bitfighter in some game site or similar that is popular. I recommend Chrome Web Store.

Also yes, get some plastic cardboard, print some surf about bitfighter on it, stick a stick in it, and put it somewhere next to the street. Little kids may get attached to the game.

Or you can do it the stupid way: hire an idiot to hold the sign on the intersection and he will tOSS it around Nd spin it and flock it so nobody can see it or where it's pointing.

Once again: the Chrome Webstore would be extremely expensive and we would have to completely rewrite Bitfighter to use and promote the Chrome plug-ins, bla bla bla

Oh, and by the way: Wed Nov 07, 2012 8:18 pm :P

But yeah we already tried putting Bitfighter on a popular game site but we haven't recieved a reply yet :/

What about AdMob? The google ads SDK for mobile apps?

EDIT: Oh wait, Bitfighter isn't mobile, what am I saying :?

We need Facebook or Google ads.

Re: Advertisement?

I'd say this in IRC but Freenode is down.

I really believe that you guys should put a donation button on this website.

I've talked to several friends and they said that they'd be happy to either pay for or donate to this game and see if it's actually "worth it". There's games out there like 0 A.D., a FOSS RTS game with a somewhat successful crowdfunding that raised up to about ~35k$, people DO really want to see games that get raised, you can still treat the game as a hobby as you guys said yourself, but having a bit of pocket money wouldn't hurt, right?

Actually, try accepting Bitcoins as donations. Bitcoins are the latest trend that's picking up big time nowadays. I think that, lack of single player, and lack of a mobile version of the game is what's getting BF overlooked. Please consider donations as I would love to see this game not be passed by. :)

I was told by a friend of mine that said that having donations would show that people are most certainly interested in a game like this. I'm not sure where the donations would go though since you guys wouldn't pocket it, but it would show how much people do care for this game.

Adding another point, I brought this up in IRC I believe, but there really *should* be a beginner's server. Not a tutorial server, but rather a server that has 1 or 2 game modes, and simple ones at that, a good start would be a Bitmatch server and/or CTF or Retrieve. Quantity and quality is what Bitfighter has, but after speaking to a couple of players in either Mumble or through text chat, they said it's a bit overwhelming to play so many different game modes. :O

That's an interesting marketing strategy. Whenever I learn about a game that has been crowdfunded through Kickstarter I do get intrigued. There's probably a similar thing happening with your friend's advice.

Beginner server sounds pretty cool. Or better yet, just call it a basic server... I wouldn't mind a server with a core of really solid and fun maps. Some Zap stock maps would be good candidates I imagine.

Ideally that's what the * pleiades * server is intended to do - once we get enough map votes, I can filter out the good ones and start a new server with the best maps

I told him I forgot so he reminded me what he said, he would be genuinely more invested if he saw people throwing money at it. The assumption goes that a "free as in free beer" game would be lackluster. However having a beginner's server would definitely be a better factor as stated in my previous post regarding that.

So it would make the game appear more "serious" on some level.

The Pleiades server will not do what was described. I hope that it will be a source of good, well liked maps, but it will not be limited by game mode. Maybe what we need is a server with just Bitmatch games on it, as that one is the easiest to understand right out of the gate.

But there's a difference between "good" maps and "beginner/basic" maps. They are not necessarily mutually exclusive, but they aren't necessarily the same either. For example, maps like Endless War or Honeycomb that promote more complex levels of play as opposed to maps like Galaxy Crossover or Monki's Dash. If that made any sense?

If I could take a look at the maps, I can see for myself. :P

But yeah, it's pretty much what you said, beginner maps should be reserved in a server.

Re: Donations, yes, people that show interest will show even more interest to other people. Throwing money at something indicates that.

Re: Pleiades, yes, it's got good maps, but a lot of them too with many different game modes, which may confuse beginners.

When games first come out, there's normally not many game modes that appear, FPS games normally have a couple (2 or 3 max), such as Deathmatch, CTF, and Capture Points. Bitfighter has lots of modes, I counted at least 9. That's both good and not good for what it's worth.

On one hand, lots of choices, woo! On the other hand, lots of choices.. oi..

So yeah, I would request a "Beginner's" or "Basic" or "24/7 Deathmatch/Bitmatch" server! I tried but sadly my current setup for the house can't handle a dedicated server. :(
