I would personally like to convey my hatred of the level son of airlock. It is a cheap attempt to try to imitate the original airlock that was the work of a genius. This level does not capture the same effect. Not to mention that it makes my computer crash.

You probably aren't waiting for it to load, but I made the executive decision not to put it in the regular rotation because of the extreme load time.

For some people, it may take a full 30 seconds.

I would like to know who made the level and have that person banned from the bitfighter forums for 24 hours, because when it was finishing up loading, my computer became compleatly unresponsive, and had to restart it.

You'll find out once voting ends. Otherwise, I advise you to be patient until the level has fully loaded, and/or not to choose it from the level select menu.

Once the level nears the very end of loading, it just freezes.

So 'Son of Airlock' takes roughly 20 seconds to load after the loading line is full: this is on an i7 CPU with medium graphics card.

For LA and BB, I would expect it to take 3-10 min for your compy to load.

It will be an exercise in great patience. :)

Patience is a virtue... That I am not strong in. So fudge that.

This is what happens when "Son of Airlock: The Quickening" loads on my computer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ib4ZYNYlu7Y

Though, i have known this problem a few days ago, and came up with something that doesn't freeze, but looks bad with missing wall edges. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RAFEAxZfEw

OK. Now that it has been determined that 'Son of Airlock' will crash your computer unless it is a new computer within 2 years... let's talk about the rest of the levels:

Celtic Arena - Hold the Flag
Oooo, pretty... Also, crazy in the arena. Lots o' death.

Curved Capture - Capture the Flag
Not sure what to say here. The worst is the green zone flag area. That is all.. Oh, and borders? Are there walls missing?

Disorder Down Under - Bitmatch
Simple map map. Fun quick bitmatch.

Distraction Curve - Zone Control
The sparks add a fun effect to the level. Very creative. Can be a little laggy sometimes. Hard to actually find the zones, which was probably the point.

Figure8_2011 - Hold the Flag
This is a good offense/defense map that I think works well with engineer. It's really difficult to get to the end of other team's side. I like the asteroid touch.

Gamepad - Capture the Flag
This was a nice, solid CTF game with good game play. Smooth walls.

Horatio the Soccer Player - Soccer
This definitely made me laugh. Hard to defend. Probably good with lots of players.

The KDE Desktop Environment - Nexus
Simple nexus that seems to play well.

Round-a-Base - Capture the Flag
Even with Zoomber evilly exploiting engineer, this was fun to play. The one route makes it difficult to keep and get the flag.

Son of Airlock: The Quickening - Bitmatch
This will crash your computer. The font is crazy. If you can get it to load, it can be a hard bitmatch with all the asteroids killing you. This would be a good map to stress-test the bitfighter code :]

This Is Life - Bitmatch
Simplest map of the lot. Is it supposed to be a big copyright symbol? Bitmatch, not much else to say.

Tower Labyrinth - Zone Control
Hard map to win and get through. Neat leveled aspect, though.

Trefoil Retrieve - Retrieve
Looks nice, but hard to actually score all three flags for a team: it's too easy to steal the flags. Constant cat and mouse game.

Easy there. It's entirely possible that the level loaded fine for the level maker and they weren't aware of this problem until it was submitted.

raptor wrote:OK. Now that it has been determined that 'Son of Airlock' will crash your computer unless it is a new computer within 2 years...

Actually, I bought my MBP about a year and a half ago, and I get the same error as Sam. If somebody manages to get through, might they kindly post a screenshot or video?

My thoughts (prepare for wall of text)

Celtic Arena - Hold the Flag
Love it. Incredible design, regardless of if the map-maker used computer tools or did it by hand. Gameplay is frantic and exciting. That said, I would like to see some other gameplay elements, as it can become repetitive. Perhaps Engineer enabled with one or two ResourceItems?

Curved Capture - Capture the Flag
I would strongly recommend the map-maker testing their maps before publishing! It looks like fun, but a lot is missing.

Disorder Down Under - Bitmatch
Nice art! Reminds me of the world map project furbuggy (?) was working on. Gameplay isn't so fun, but still a decent map.

Distraction Curve - Zone Control
I like it! Utilizes a neat idea in a simple but fun map.

Figure8_2011 - Hold the Flag
Love it! The Engineer works really well, and the map is reminiscent of some of the stock maps. However, change the name! Be unique. :)

Gamepad - Capture the Flag
Neat map, neat art.

Horatio the Soccer Player - Soccer
Haha! Funny art. Map doesn't play very well but that's okay.

The KDE Desktop Environment - Nexus
Great Nexus map! I was reluctant when I first started playing it, but after a while I really enjoyed it. And this is coming from a guy who doesn't really like Nexus!

Round-a-Base - Capture the Flag
Engineering turrets and laserbeams in the bottlenecked areas provided much amusement, but in all seriousness the map did not play very well. That said, I like the idea and I'd be curious to see where the map-maker took it! If the bottlenecked area was not the only path it might play out a bit better.

Son of Airlock: The Quickening - Bitmatch
No comment. Map crashes and I have not been able to play it.

This Is Life - Bitmatch
A minimalist level, but the map-maker needs to create more spawn points! The concept of it being 3.14 quickly became lost as I was too focused on trying to spawn kill everyone else. ;)

Tower Labyrinth - Zone Control
Intriguing, but currently has a poor design. For starters, it is damn near impossible to score a touchdown, and once that became apparent one strategy would be to get more points than the other team, and drop the flag in your heavily defended base. I would recommend adding more flags and removing so many defenses on the bases. I like the slide though! :D

Trefoil Retrieve - Retrieve
Neat simplistic design (which I like), but there was one small flaw that ended up tarnishing the entire map -- the bases have no defenses and it is very easy to swoop in, take a flag, and get out. Additionally, there are only three flags. What this means is that without three players to a team, it is very difficult to capture. I applaud the map-maker for taking on the challenge of having a three-teamed map, but this map should not be played with any less than 3 players to a team. One way of combating this issue would be to add a fourth flag or remove one of the zones, making scoring slightly easier.

Overall
Not bad! I think many maps could've benefited from testing. _k, what do you think about putting up the ContestServ as usual, but allowed map-makers 48 hours or so to publicly test and edit their maps? I believe that was actually done in one of your previous contests. There's no worse feeling than sending in a level only to find out it's got an annoying bug.

Favorites (so far): Celtic Arena, Distraction Curve, Figure8_2011, The KDE Desktop Environment

Nice template...thanks!

Celtic Arena - Hold the Flag
Looks very cool. Plays pretty tedious.

Curved Capture - Capture the Flag
This is kind of an ADD map. I think it's fun to see these.

Disorder Down Under - Bitmatch
I like the outline. Pretty standard, though.

Distraction Curve - Zone Control
It's a neat idea, but the curves aren't very curvy.

Figure8_2011 - Hold the Flag
I like the simplicity. It can be really tough to get to the far end, though.

Gamepad - Capture the Flag
It's simple, but it works. Sort of wish there was more to it.

Horatio the Soccer Player - Soccer
I like this one for what it is.

The KDE Desktop Environment - Nexus
Pretty fun, but the hostile turrets make the outside less functional.

Round-a-Base - Capture the Flag
I would like this better if the pathway operated more smoothly.

Son of Airlock: The Quickening - Bitmatch
Gameplay is about average. The file is over 800 KB.

This Is Life - Bitmatch
A bit small for anything over about 60 seconds.

Tower Labyrinth - Zone Control
It's tough to get a touchdown, but one touchdown is the win score.

Trefoil Retrieve - Retrieve
Very pretty. Gameplay is less so.

Overall
I think most of the curve stuff looks awesome. My favorites will probably be the ones that don't sacrifice gameplay for good looks. Need more time to develop strong opinions, though.

Celtic Arena - Hold the Flag
It looks very good, but the game play have a problem, very hard to defend your flags in a goal zone, especially when enemy spawns and teleport near the enemy goal zones. As with 3 team battle, all players often go after the team with most score, making the score just about equal most of the time in a big battle.
Curved Capture - Capture the Flag
Zone 3 and 1 plays good, but missing walls in some areas allows ship to go out of bounce, with the flag. The use of multiple flags is good to prevent waiting for flag to return, maybe even to try prevent flags from running out to space, but all flags can still go out to space making enemies not able to find the flags.
Disorder Down Under - Bitmatch
To me, the walls looks like a scribble. This level looks simple, but a small problem with spawn at the bottom right of the level being trapped inside a tiny area.
Distraction Curve - Zone Control
Good idea to make moving ships a distraction, and it lets people watch that even with server is near empty, but more players might go idling.
Figure8_2011 - Hold the Flag
Engineer works good, but this level is simply one big curved path, combined with engineer, is kind of hard to get to the other end of the path.
Gamepad - Capture the Flag
Looks like a good game pad. The flag bases doesn't have any turrets or force fields, but is just long enough to be able to defend the base.
Horatio the Soccer Player - Soccer
This level kind of look like someone's face, but only when viewing the whole level (C Map). Otherwise it looks like a simple level that is hard to defend.
The KDE Desktop Environment - Nexus
Plays good, but the letter "K" does not use curves.
Round-a-Base - Capture the Flag
This level plays good if there wasn't engineer. With engineer and a small battle, it is a bit too easy to trap the enemy from getting anywhere.
Son of Airlock: The Quickening - Bitmatch
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ib4ZYNYlu7Y Freeze and disconnect while loading this level in a server, and I can't see all the Barriers very well.
This Is Life - Bitmatch
This level is simple, but there is only one spawn point making spawn kill easy.
Tower Labyrinth - Zone Control
Good use of multiple floors, and that sliding thing. The problem is there is a goal on each of the team's spawn points, with forcefields, making it hard to touch down all goal zones in a big battle.
Trefoil Retrieve - Retrieve
Good use of curves, but there is no turrets and no forcefields and too easy to grab the flag on enemy goal, making it too hard to touch down all 3 flags.
