December 2012 Level Design Contest

Now that 018 has been released, we can have a Level Design Contest!

THEME
The contest will be somewhat open-themed this time; however, we want an emphasis on the new features of 018. Some features you may wish to consider:
  • Seeker
  • Engineered Teleporter
  • Levelgen scripts with triggers (I highly recommend this one)

RULES
The rules are the same as last contest. Notably:
  • Maps must be brand new
  • Maps must be anonymous. Player/author credits should be removed before submitted
  • Submit your maps to me (raptor) directly via PM (private message) on the forums. I am allowing PMs for the duration of the contest only :)
  • At the end of the contest, all maps will be posted to the forums. If you have a problem with this, let me know and we can make an exception
  • You may submit multiple entries and have them be eligible for winning

Always remember: quality, not quantity

CONTEST ENDS
11:59 PM PST, Thursday, Dec 27 2012

CONTEST PARTY
9:00 PM EST, Friday, Dec 28 2012

Edit: Winner will receive a badge!:

The documentation is woefully out of date and scattered. K wrote a tutorial, which is on the wiki, which will still (mostly) work, but does not address he fact that scripts can stay alive and respond to events.

One way to approach it is to think about what you want to do, and then discuss with me, sam, or raptor whether it is feasible. The best way to do that is to join our IRC channel, #bitfighter on freenode. (There is a link to that on the title bar from the front page of bitfighter.org.)

What's the protocol for testing maps among friends?

I'd say do what you want - just tell them not to snitch on you :)

Preferably try to keep known forum members (who would eventually vote) from knowing the author of any map.

Understandable -- a couple of others have been working on the levelgen angle, and there are still a lot of rough edges. In future, if you want help with a levelgen, be sure to stop by our irc chat room and discuss your ideas.

It has been really helpful to see what people are trying to do, so we can make sure the game supports these ideas properly.

And a special thanks to everyone who has been patiently working through the scripting issues with us!

If read that message now, that is outdated? Party of about 8 players have happened at least a few hours ago.
