Taking nominations...

Bitfighter 017 will be out in a few weeks, mostly with bugfixes, but with a couple of neat features. One new feature in 016, but is barely noticeable is that a system for assigning "badges" to players who have accomplished certain feats is working.
Except there is only one accomplishment coded so far, and (almost) none of you are going to earn it.

For 017, I'd like to add one or two accomplishments, and then we can build from there. So I'm taking nominations for ideas.
Criteria:
1. Relatively easy to accomplish
2. But not too easy
3. But something most people will be able to get eventually
4. Easy to code (especially if it can leverage the statistics we're currently collecting)
5. Should probably be related to something in-game, but would consider good ideas for community-related badges, such as posting 1000+ messages in the forums, for example.
I'm thinking that we'll eventually have several tiers of accomplishments; this would be something in the easiest tier. Also, just so you know, the system is built to support 32 different accomplishments. That's plenty of room to grow...

How about "When I'm 64", and you have to capture or steal 64 flags?

It's basically achievements with a different name.
5 maps played.
Played for 1 hour straight.
Played for 3 hours straight.
Played a day of Bitfighter total (24 hours accumulative).
Zapped 20 active ships.
Killed a bot.
Killed 5 bots.
Captured a flag. (5) (10) (100)
Destroyed a Core. (5) (10) (100)
Hosted a server.
Made a map. (5) (10) (100)
Played on a server with 1/5/10/20 other real player(s).
Retrieved a flag.
Made a touchdown.
Amass 50 Nexus flags without cheating (Done it on a dedicated server with other players).
If you want more, ask me. I have loads of them.

They shouldn't be *too* easy.
I actually think we're going to blow through 32 "badges" in no time, flat.
Maybe we reserve 1/3 of them for version-specific achievements that get reset each time a new release comes out? Maybe 8 out of 32?

I think they should probably be hard things to do, so that we don't blow through them like that. There should also be a system in place to prevent abuse. (require a server with 10 registered players?)
hold a rabbit flag for the entire match.
turn in 100 nexus flags at once.
Capture 3(5?) flags in a row.
Are badges going to be visible graphics? I could probably do some of the work for them.

I think bobdaduck got the right idea. I think the achievements should be correlated to playing with people, so that new players will play the game longer to try to achieve awards. For example, be in fight of 10vs 10 people of registered members. This isn't easy, but ain't too hard (nor requires any skill). It's related to if you ever played a BBB before or a huge event. Another example is winning 10 games in a row. This is hard, but possible as long as you play the game for a certain amount of time to become a good enough player to win games.
The awards should PERSUADE people to play the game longer in my opinion. Not just make persons brag about themselves, even though players will do this, but pride alone is boring.

I think that people should be able to earn badges regardless of their skill level. It gives them something to be proud of, and makes them want to get the next, more difficult badge. For example, Steam makes really good use of the Achievements. When you first start playing Gmod, you can get two achievements right off the bat. Play Singleplayer, and Play Multiplayer. But then off course, there are harder ones. Like to play Gmod for a total of 365 days. The achievement is called Addict.
Basically what I'm saying is if all the badges are really hard to get, there will be less of a desire to attain them. There should be badges going all the way up to the difficult ones.

And from this, players will want to play the game longer and may even become addicted to it. That's the business mind behind petty awards. In other words, more players will play/register from the type of awards that Skybax is describing.

what about tiered achievements? Lets take my "capture x flags in a row" idea.
You have bronze, where its just like two flags in a row or something like that. You then try for silver, where you get five in a row. Gold is seven in a row, and platinum is ten.
as far as anti-abuse... We could implement a system where only certain levels are elligable to get achievements on, and people could submit levels to some designated achievements admin who could approve them.

I like the tier idea, but the anti-system abuse can make it harder to get awards because you have to be in a public server, not your own. (there aren't many servers) BUT if you were on your own server unlocking awards, is that defined as abusive?

not server, but level. Lets say you host a server with the stock levels on them. Since these levels are approved for achievements, it doesn't matter which server you play them on. Combine that with the 8+ players system, and abuse possibilities gets shut down pretty fast.

I think it's difficult to determine whether the stock levels have been modified or not, but that's a separate issue.
The way I understand it, we essentially have 32 "blocks" for achievements. That doesn't mean 32 arrays, or 32 x 3 tiers, it means 32 total. However, watusimoto is talking about splitting the 32 up into various difficulty levels. So, for example, we could have 8 relatively easy badges, 8 medium, 8 hard, and 8 elite. If you really wanted, you could burn up four of those with "Zap 1 Ship", "Zap 100 Ships", "Zap 10,000 Ships", and "Zap 1,000,000 Ships".
For the easy tier though, I think it might be cool to get some variety...although I'm not sure how easy it would be to track some of these...
- Post an original level on the forums.
- Zap ships using each weapon.
- Win a game of each gametype.
- Host a dedicated server.
- Reach 25 posts on the forums.

I only skimmed the recent posts so my apologies if this has already been answered -- why exactly is there a limit on 32 achievements/badges? Where will these badges be shown off? Couldn't there just be a page that scrolls vertically, offering an indefinite amount of achievements/badges?

Well, I don't understand your obstacle in programming the award thing, but both 64 and 32 are powers of 2. If you could raise/edit the item
limit, make it 64?

It's probably a different issue than the powers of 2...idk.

I can tell you that watusimoto already has some relatively developed ideas on how badges will work, although I'll let him elaborate for himself if he feels like it.
For anyone who was interested in brainstorming ideas for badges visually, it looks like they're going to be vector-drawn and will appear within bitfighter itself...so keep that in mind. You probably also want to keep your ideas scalable, so that they retain identity and look okay shrunk down as well as big. I'm guessing that "big" is about ship-sized, and "small" is about name-text-size.
These are just my guesses based on what I've seen and been told so far.

Ok, so here is the first good candidate achievement:
Return 20 flags to the nexus on a level that has no flag spawns and no predeployed flags, and in a game in which there are at least 3 other human players, at least one of which is registered.
Possibly adding:
And in a game in which no one (at least up until the point the achievement was awarded) had suicided more than 5 times.
So questions: 1) Is 20 the right number; 2) Is the suicide requirement needed

1) 20 is a good number and I like the overall award requirements.
2) This is just an honor-type award to me and seems easy to get if you play by yourself with bots. Also, it's "committed suicide." I think it needs a bit more requirements. I think it's a good award idea, too.

I think that's more complicated than it needs to be. I would take out the suicide requirement and registration requirement. Achievements are only as good as what you get out of it. If somebody wants to cheat, so be it.

Maybe we should not have specific unique achievements at all. Just to make things simple, maybe we should have kill/death ratio, number of games played, number of posts, number of wins, high point scoring, and high flag scoring awards.

These are way too easy... Its not an achievement if its something like "fire your first phaser." Its just a pat on the back.
We could do scaling, bronze-silver-gold-glowyshiny, which would work better. And glowyshiny should be things that no one yet has done.

I rather not see any achievements that require idling, suicide, or kill your team to get it. That only makes the players not play the game the way it should be played.
Many achievements suggested could add more to it like "without dying" or "in less then 2 minutes".

These are both great comments. We can take ideas suggested in this thread but add on extra requirements that get progressively more difficult. Ex. A bronze badge might require completing the objective within 5 minutes, a silver badge requires completion in 3 minutes, a gold badge requires completion in 1 minute.
By simply coloring the badge differently we can increase the amount of objectives present while still leaving room for more badges.
