New AMBITIOUS mode

Here's an idea. I just had it..

Players like to make maps
Players like to fight each other.

This mode will combine both areas of the game into 1 mode. A little like Minecraft, really.

Advantages are numerous. I know it needs more explaining but stay with me, I'm going to do that!

So we got eight players in a game, right? Decent sized map, nothing major. Well, all of a sudden, the mode is changed to this new one. Now, everyone goes crazy. Walls are appearing on the map as fast as people can place them, while everyone is in the game. Maybe half the players are shooting at each other, and spamming walls and turrets, or teleporters. The other guy will go to just destroy them! Someone puts a speed zone, walls and asteroid spawner down for a cannon. Another guy just goes off and makes his own base. Makes a nice little house. So everyone's been making their stuff, destroying other peoples stuff (which includes walls and other normally indestructible stuff) and still shooting at each other like a normal Bitfighter game. It sounds a bit like Minecraft from what I've played of it, because that's where I'm coming from.

Now, I haven't set any rules, that's up to game developers or server guys.

Maybe we make a new game object, a square wall section, which can be destroyed, but also used to create walls.

An editing mode that can let people play in the level as you're editing it has been suggested before.

It's just editing as you play. Multiplayer editing alone would honestly be pretty cool.

Of course, this is NOT something you can recreate 100% in a levelgen. No way at all. You could fake it.. But if that's the way you go, I'd just as soon make my own game (half srs, I'd need to learn the skills first)

I had plans doing this with a levelgen, too. But yeah, you would have to fake it, since I am pretty sure the client won't check for new walls in 019, maybe in 020 levelgens will have access to walls...

I am pretty sure the client won't check for new walls in 019, maybe in 020 levelgens will have access to walls...
Levelgens can create new walls; but there is no current mechanism for modifying or deleting existing walls (or even the new walls created by the levelgen itself). The networking would also support the ability for them to delete all walls, though I don't think we've created a command to do so.

I was thinking of a kind of "brick" item rather than a real wall object. The brick could have health which would make it destructible. It could be an engineered item (requiring a resource) or something else.

Ehh can levelgen put the editor in the game? Like all the editor GUI up on the right side? While shooting lasers and stuff like normal?

No this wont work unless say there is a delay for building then the level starts and people can no longer build in the level i think this would be better. as someone could just spam 9999999999 turrets asteroid spawn mines or force fields and ruin the game play. Remember all things must be balanced.

This seems like an implication of the players and their behaviors, not the balance or design of the system. I imagine some people could find that as amusing, for example, and wouldn't want it banned. For those who don't find it as funny, I think they could simply kick the troublemaking individuals.

Although a simple spam monitor (ie. can't place more than x items in y seconds) should be able to address that nicely.

We could provide levelgen access to UI components if we had a compelling use case.

Watusimoto, I have often thought of neat levelgens with the use of UI, but this might be used too much and lead to ugliness
