While on a wall...

While on a wall, should you be able to shoot off of it? Currently you can only shoot off bursts and bouncers. You can go to the edge of the wall and shoot any weapon, but you run the risk of falling off or taking damage.

Some people may argue that no, it would make it too powerful. Well then, why can you shoot bursts or bouncers off of walls? You could also just take it out of your level.

My thinking is that currently people add them in for fun or just a filler. However, this could be a real gameplay option, an addition to the defensive features.

Remember that one way wall a while back? They go arm in arm together. Instead of using a portal to get onto the wall, players could just walk up onto the wall and defend.

EDIT Oct. 2011: I still like the idea of a one way wall -- being able to fly up onto a wall and have temporary protection from enemies or safely move to another area. And the idea of using one way walls as a method of defense was a neat idea.

However, being able to shoot off the end seems extremely unfair. Players could fire phasers off the edge at enemies and be completely protected from damage. It would really depend on how the level editor utilized these one way walls.

As for the current set-up:

If possible, the glitch allowing bouncers to shoot past the wall should be removed. I don't know about bursts, as they're not as accurate, but bouncers escaping the wall barrier should definitely be disabled.

Actually, it's not quite correct that you can only shoot bursts off the wall -- bouncers work just as well.

I've used them as a phaser substitute sometimes, when I plan to be on such a wall.

I'm not sure what you mean, but I mean when standing on a wall, what weapons should you be allowed to shoot off it.

If somebody wants to try just go into the level editor, make a thick wall and put a spawn on it.

And sure, somebody can move it if they want.

Actually, I believe Sky_Lark is asking if we can expand this "feature" (though, really it started off as more of an oversight I think, but whatevs) To other weapons- namely phasers and Triples I believe. Also, if a mine is on a wall but explodes, it doesn't harm those not on the wall, no matter how close they are. I kind of like this though, I think it makes a cool confetti effect.

Yeah, I get the issue. We could:

Leave things the way they are.
Prevent any weapons from exiting barriers.
Allow all weapons to exit barriers.

Kind of separate...
Create partial barriers with only one "hard" edge.


Personally, I kind of like the exploit-nature of the way we've used barriers so far, but I don't really care one way or another what we do. I'd be slightly disappointed if we prevented any weapons from exiting barriers.

heres the thing, were all missing one component here. Both bouncers and bursts can bounce off walls right? i believe triples and phasers don't do that. Therefore, the whole physics of the game would be altered, as phasers could now pass a wall boundary, even if its downhill, without crashing.

It just seems kinda odd not letting all the weapons through. Maybe we should add triple but not phaser, so the value would go up and it wouldn't be as dangerous?

PS. "Yes, only certain weapons" means adding another but not all, while "No, keep it the same" means just keeping it with burst and bouncer.

Well Zoomber's point is well taken, that barriers normally "absorb" phasers, triple, and mines, but not bouncers and bursts. From an actual mechanical standpoint, that's probably what allows the glitch to work. I mean, we know that it's currently a glitch and not an intentional feature.

Can you elaborate on that? im not sure what you're saying when you ask for a "half-wall"

you can just click the wall and press the - key to make it smaller, in half if thats what you want.

I mean, a wall with the ability to go through it one way. One-way walls.
Just take the bright blue line off one side to let you enter the wall from one side.

you can do that by just spawning on a mini polywall. This polywall is then on top of another more gianntic polywall.

if you could, that would make its function the same of a speed-zone at 500 speed. Which are basically 1 way walls, with the exception you can shoot through them.

You can shoot both ways through speed zones. And you can't stay on top of them, you're pushed through, into enemy fire.
As for sky_lark's question, yes, it would act just like a normal wall once you're on top of it.

ok, the only thing is sometimes walls dont show the full barrier on them, (no outline, just the wall part). that could get ocnfusing unless taht bug is fixed.

Climb up ladder or stairs to go on top of wall? Problem is ships don't walk, ships fly. There is no ground, no grass, no water in space. if ships fly, can a ship just fly up to any wall without using ladder or stairs and then be on top of walls? Climbing up the ladder or stairs would of make more sense if this game was at a ground level, not in space with stars on the background.

These are more like hovercraft on a dusty black floor than space ships in a three dimensional plane.
Hovercraft can go up ramps.

technically you can just fly onto the wall.....

It was a bad word choice. I was simply trying to describe movement in Bitfighter. "Fly" would be the better choice.

I agree with Skybax, think of a one-way wall like a ramp.

EDIT: I updated the original post. If one-way walls are a go, we'll need to be careful on how we implement them.

I change my opinion, I think that only bursts should be able to be shot off walls, because they are more grenade/bomb-esque, while Phasers and Bouncers are like shots.

This was the glitch that you just described above. Looks like this has been fixed.

I agree. Bursts are now the only weapon that can be fired off a wall, although the burst projectile gets stuck on the edge of the wall when fired (on top of a wall). I don't know if this can be fixed without dramatically modifying the physics, but it's a little weird.

I think he means, dont let bouncers go from in the polybarrier, outside of it.

It's not an actual rule that we're not allowed to get ahead of ourselves, it just seems silly...and it might be a little annoying, as hard as they're working on 016. I hope we can all enjoy the new version for a little while before we start complaining about the new crap we want.

Raptor and sam have been working out an impressive amount of bugs and changes in 016. Just be patient. If its on google-code, its will get there eventually.

Lol nice 3-year bump. I am still curious though about the discrepancy. It seems to me allowing some weapons to shoot off walls and others to not is inconsistent and probably a bit confusing to new users. I think players should either be able to shoot off walls with all weapons or not be able to shoot off walls at all.

Ramps are an interesting idea but they seem much more niche IMO. The same effect can be accomplished relatively effectively with a teleporter.
