Lobby changes

Bit of a hijack here but I have two observations about the server lobby. First, is it possible to change the notification sound heard upon a player's entry? Last night I was sitting in the lobby waiting for folks to come to the party and Quartz came in, but I didn't hear the tiny beep and I almost missed him as a result. I think a slightly longer, slightly more distinctive sound might be appreciated. Or at least the option to modify the sound.

edit: Bug below no longer valid. Confirmed to work Fri 9/12/14. Kept for posterity.

Second, is there a reason I can't see lobby chat when I press F5 while hosting a non-dedicated server? The lobby chat appears as normal while on other servers, but when I host a server it just says there's nobody in the lobby (which may not be true) and doesn't show any messages. I'm not confident if it can receive the messages I send either.

Absolutely

Re: Lobby changes

Withdrawing the second bug. It worked fine at the last party so I presume it was just a one-time thing, maybe due to a faulty connection.

Can someone explain how to use the Bitfighter notifier? I still don't quite understand how it works.

Re: Lobby changes

I think it's just a python script. Head over to terminal, and type
  Code:
python "location of bitfighter notification"

Re: Lobby changes

To use the notifier on OSX:

1. Open a command prompt and go into the Bitfighter.app folder.
2. Find a file called 'bitfighter_notifier.py' and run it with python, like so:
  Code:
python /path/to/bitfighter_notifier.py

Re: Lobby changes

on windows just find notifier.exe in he bitfighter folder and rn it i assume you can do the same on other OS but i could be wrong.

On a related note why don't we internalize notifier .exe into bitfighter (default is on) and have a option to have it on or off. (but still have a notifier.exe program like we currently do in case you don't want to leave BF open.)

Re: Lobby changes

So @sky_lark, you want to make the alert louder? You could increase the game sfx volume; or you could replace the WAV file itself with a different/louder one; or you can suggest a different sound that you think would be better and we'll consider it for the next release.

Actually, you could do all of these :-)

Re: Lobby changes

@sky_lark Would a Dashboard widget be better? It would be easy to make, but not cross-platform

Re: Lobby changes

Whoops, missed this thread. So about the notifier:

- Thanks for the instruction guys, I finally figured it out! That should actually be really effective.

- @Fordy Dashboard widget would be awesome, or maybe a little Bitfighter icon that sits in the menu bar and flashes when people log on. Something a bit less cumbersome than running a python script. :)

- @Watusimoto how do I change the lobby-join sound? I would like to replace it with an alternate audio file. Something longer and more distinctive. Also, here's a suggestion: If Bitfighter.app is minimized or another program is selected, have the audio file play on repeat for 30 seconds or 1 minute, to be stopped only when the game window is clicked on. Think of it as a little alarm!

Re: Lobby changes

Okay, so maybe have an option to disable it in the .ini file. Problem solved!

but younger users may find changing the Ini harder.

Maybe just make the tone louder?

Re: Lobby changes

sky_lark, I have made a verrry simple notifier for the web browser if you want. All you do is double click on the .html and leave it running in the background.

Re: Lobby changes

The dedicated server uses the player_joined.wav file. This is also used in-game. Perhaps for 020 (or 019d?) we should make this be a separate file so you can modify it without changing the in-game sfx.

Re: Lobby changes

using the player joined sound works well.

maybe have a internal notifier as well? so if you are on a different server you know someone joined? maybe thats for another thread...... 8-)
