Bitfighter.org runs in VPS, right now in Urpad. Urpad claims to be doing frequent backups, but I guess they probably got massive corruption and loss of data from IPMI hack. I think they were unable to restore bitfighter.org from backup, leaving us with a few months old that a few of our administrators and developers that did multiple, partial backup many months ago.
Bitfighter.org runs in a VPS. Each server node host many VPS. Multiple server node run by Urpad got hacked. When a server node get hacked or dies, all VPS in it also dies.
VPS is like virtual machine and server node is like real machine. You have to turn on the real machine in order to start one or more virtual machines, and make sure the real machine don't get hacked. One powerful machine can run many VPS, and is cheaper to just get a VPS. We can only control bitfighter.org VPS, so its the company's responsibility to make sure the real machine is running ok with protection against hacks.
Don't blame it on bitfighter.org, blame it on the evil hackers that hacked Urpad's servers.
