Annoucement from Hum~

Hi everyone,

(This is to all who have levels that were created by Hum~)

Please remove all maps that were created by Hum~.

Reason: Fragmented versions of certain maps

Explanation: Maps that were created by Hum~ have been rigorously updated, thus leading to better maps over time. However, servers/downloaders may have older versions of a certain map, leading to multiple versions of the same map.

Includes:
1. Angry Birds Lite (Hum~)
2. PQ
3. R&R
4. Tutorial
5. Phoenix- (C/P)
6. Subway System
7. EasyAs123

Call to Action:
1. Delete all maps that were created by Hum~
2. New "Final" versions of the maps will be released on July 22~23, 2011.

Thanks.

Re: Annoucement from Hum~

you can't just expect everyone to take the time to take down their servers and remove the maps because you upload them or gave them away before you finished them. like someone said, (i think it was karamazovapy), "when you upload your levels, your essentially giving them away". Now, if you want, you could re-upload the level to servers with a sub-header saying "level still in progress" until you finish your level to upgrade again, but you can't expect everyone to actually do this..

for my server, bitfighter main(), I can /deletemap for them if you'd like. They will disappear when-ever I need to restart the server. I dont know if you will be able to reupload them however, if they are already on the skip list then, and might not reappear unless i delete the ini file.

I think that if someone created a map they should have at least some say over if/how it is used. I'm not sure that making your server support downloads removes that right, though it certainly does complicate things.

Re: Annoucement from Hum~

Remember, the reason why I am asking for this "recall" is because I am worried about fragmentation.

In a given server, they might be 20 different versions of one map.

This does not mean to remove each level, one by one.

Only the 7, that I have made so far. :|

I think when you make your level public, by uploading it to a public server or posting it on the forums, you're giving up some of your rights. You can request that people honor your wishes, but no one here is going to get litigious over levels for an open source game. Besides, not many people design levels that can't be recreated from a screenshot and a few hours' hard work.

If you don't want people to use/abuse your work, you need to keep it private or only distribute it to people you trust.

That is because you are intentionally changing the name of the file each time before you upload it. If you keep the file name the same, and the game name the same, bitfighter will overwrite the file when you upload it.

You are intentionally changing the level file, "Parties Quest V2.0" to "Parties Quest V3.0". That's absolutely unnecessary. There is a place in the Level Description to mention the version, or just change it in the game title. Thats all to it.

What about seeing what servers are hosting your maps? Would that be possible? You could then talk to the owner directly.

Re: Annoucement from Hum~

some were on mine. If i weren't so busy, I would take the time to browse through and delete his, but either the server is full of players, and I am not going too interrupt a game for that, or I just don't have the time to work on the server.

Re: Annoucement from Hum~

My whole intention was to satisfy the End-Player.

Playing the same map 16 times with more errors with each revision.

Wouldn't that furstrate the players?

I am not saying that I want them deleted because I can do anything with my levels.

I am saying, deleting them will potentially not fustrate the user when they are playing the certain levels over and over and over...

(For a lack if a better phrase), If these levels remain, you are potentially screwing the players because of the repetition.

Would you like to deter players, because a couple of minor adjustments (server wise), and an inconsistent updator, (me)?

I understand that's what you've been trying to say along, but you've tapped into a related conversation that's been going on as well. Trying to give players the best experience is great. Nobody questions that. The larger question about control and ownership of intellectual property remains.

But my goal isn't to argue, it's just to HELP.

But i found a solution:

Remove Old levels, and i get new levels.

As SIMPLE as that, it doesn't need to be a congressional debate over "copyright".

"Simple, easy, quick," that's my motto.

Re: Annoucement from Hum~

I dont mean to be critical, but you're still making it more complicated, especialy for the server-side. ALL you have to do, is stop changing the file names. I didn't buy a remote server so I would have to constantly maintain it with removing levels every day. But the upload system was made to work, and work it does. Just dont change the file name. You may change the title of the map as many times as you want, or anything. Just keep the filename the same, and it overwrites it. No two or three levels. If more than one level shows up, could sometimes be a bug that server thinks a level is added, but even though there are two level selections, they both point to the same map file, and thats MUCH easier to fix server side, with a simnple /restart.

Wrong, it doesn't matter what the file name is, because file name of a level is not send to the server. When uploaded, server decides on the file name by putting in "upload_" then title of level. It will only overwrite only if it is the same title that been uploaded before.

Re: Annoucement from Hum~

Honestly I'd just never give out a map that isn't completed. Let people beta it on my server, perhaps, but never give it out.

Re: Annoucement from Hum~

Hum, let's get this out of the way: Because there was no kind of signed agreement when we downloaded your levels, we can do what we want with them. Hell, we could even claim credit for your levels. It may not be the right thing to do and it may be frowned up by the community, but we can.

Now, I totally understand that you want to give the players the best experience possible. I would too. And when you finish improving your levels, you can talk to the server owners and kindly request that they replace the old versions with the new versions.

But that's the limit of your powers. Quite simply, even if it's the right thing to do and it benefits the users, it is the decision of the server owners. Maybe that needs to be changed, I don't know, but that is how it is right now, plain and simple.

Okay...I'm gonna put a lock on this thing. If anyone would like to start a digital rights management thread, you're welcome to do so.

Re: Annoucement from Hum~

One parting thought from someone who can post in locked threads: I do want to acknowledge that Hum's issue wasn't about legal rights, though I misunderstood that at first, as apparently many others also did.
