Is your computer a 64 bit? If you gotten a windows 7 starter, it most likely a tiny laptop that might be slower, and is 32 bit only.
As for Linux, there is a 32 bit and 64 bit version, and maybe other other version of Ubuntu Linux, be sure to download the correct one. 32 bit Linux might work on 64 bit CPU, but might be slow. 64 bit Linux will not work on 32 bit CPU.

Lol, i just got a laptop for Christmas with Windows 7 (64 bit i think) and my dad was nice enough to "dual boot" it, which means making it so i can Windows or Ubuntu. What's funny is that he installed Ubuntu 10.4.3, so i had to update like 3 times... oh well.
