Re: May Contest Discussion

(incoherent grumbling)

Assassination - Zone Control
I really like the concept of this level. It really favors stealth over strength and/or speed, and not a lot of maps do that.
I think it did great as well when it comes to the theme. Storming the castle and all that. The robots were an awesome touch also, tho it makes it kind of stupid when someone kicks them all -pointed look-
My only complaint is that it's a bit big, and since it's a ZC, that makes it really hard to find whoever has the flag before they get back to their base.
Overall, 9/10

Bastion - Core
The artwork in this map is awesome. It all feels really natural and cool.
Out of the many core maps submitted for the contest, I feel this is one of the better ones.
The theme was a bit vague, though. The only thing I saw that reminded me of "castle" is the drawing of a lion in one of the boxes lol
My only complaints level-wise are that the windy passageways are kind of annoying, and the giant center area is a bit useless.
Overall, 8/10

Castle fighters - Capture the Flag
This map reminded me of a map that would come with Bitfighter. It was very well built and thought out. The theme was very apparent, the teleports are in good spots, it's easy to play... wow. Really good stock-esque map.
However, this also means that it wasn't very unique or very interesting. Also, I would suggest putting a regen on the turrets.
Overall, 8.5/10

Galactic Parasites - Core
While this map is very cool looking, it is also a bit unbalanced, with the red team having a major advantage. Their cores are tucked away in a corner, only accessible by a narrow passageway, while the blue cores are out in the open waiting to be thrashed. Red team always wins.
I also don't really see the correlation between this map and the theme.
Overall, 7/10

Green Eggs and Ham - Nexus
This map is just weird
I see a few flaws in it, though. For one, with engineer, you can build an almost impenetrable base right over the enemy's tele-out. You basically win if you can keep them repaired and keep making new ones. Secondly, you can just blow yourself up in your own base a bunch of times, get like 40 flags, and then when the Nexus opens, you come out of the teleport like right next to it. Game over.
I also don't see how the theme was incorporated.
Overall, 6/10

Hardcastle - Capture the Flag
This map. Wow. It can take to the end of eternity to finish it. Also, the teams are a bit unbalanced, the red side being at a disadvantage in how the one laser is closer, making it able to be hit by phasers. The blue team, though, is missing a turret, and one of them is on the wrong side of the wall. This makes the map seem like it was rushed in the building process.
Oh and the teleports take you different places.
The theme is very apparent, though. You literally have to Storm the Castle. You can't do it alone. Props for that.
Overall, 6/10

Hunters Revival - Nexus
Ohmaigawd. This map just frustrates me. You fight and you fight and you fight and you get so many flags and then you can't make it to the Nexus without exploding. It's almost like two separate playing fields.
I didn't check to see if the turrets had regen or not, I was too busy trying not to get blasted by the other players. But if they do, that's even more pain for my brain.
Slightly recognizable when it comes to the theme.
Overall, 4/10

KillYouHere - Capture the Flag
This is an interesting map, because although it's on the larger side, you don't really notice it. The crazy flag spawns make for an interesting game, because you never know if your flag is going to spawn right next to everyone else's xD
The theme was apparent but not really used that much. It was really just circles next to the doorways. It was very fun tho :D
Overall, 7/10

Picture Frame - Nexus
No offense to whoever designed this map, but I hate it. I'm sorry.
I hate getting stuck in the speedzones. I hate how you have to get the timing just right because the Nexus is only open for half a second. I hate how the cores get in the way. I hate how open the middle is. It's just all badness. I don't know if you trolled with this map or what. The theme isn't even here.
Overall, 1/10

Qal'ah - Core
This is a very interesting map indeed. Is it Arabic or something? Who knows Arabic? lol
Despite the corridors being different lengths, it's actually pretty balanced if you play it. I think the speed zones might have a roll in that. Surprisingly fun map.
Can't really see the theme, though. EDIT: Scratch that, I've been told that the Arabic translation is equivalent to the word Castle. So, very interesting incorporation of the theme xD Score stays the same tho
Overall, 7/10

Seige - Core
This map is kind of cute lol... I like the catapults
Anyways, it seems like the insides of the castles weren't designed very well. The turrets don't really face at anything, and it's really easy to avoid getting shot by opponents. So.. terrible for defense. Great for offense tho lol
It seems like it really boils down to who spawns where, because if you spawn in the middle, you can get to your enemy's castle faster and you can win. It might be different if there were more players, I only played with 4, but yeah.
Obvious display of theme, though.
Overall, 7/10

Star Castle - Core
This one is misleading! I've been deceived!
It has castle in the name, but it's more of a Space Invader themed map.
It looks like a Starfighter vs a Mothership.
I don't like all the open space.
Also, the Invader team has an advantage, because they can just camp in front of their core and pretty much nobody's gonna get in xD
Not so with the Defender team. A lot more open space.
Overall, 6/10

Wub - Bitmatch
Ahhh, a team Bitmatch. Always fun. The only Bitmatch in the contest, actually.
The turrets provide a defense at first, but they quickly get taken out by aggravated players, so I'd recommend a regen on those. Also, the edges of the map make it kind of big, so it's easier than expected to hide from others.
The theme wasn't included in the map, either. Unless you count the flaw as a figurative representation of the word "Castle" or something.
The flaw being, once your team gets ahead, just don't leave your spawn point and wait the round out. Win is yours.
Overall, 6/10

Re: May Contest Discussion

Only commenting on ones I played/remember the names for.

Assassination - Zone Control
Assassination was quite ludicriss, also pointless. By the time someone gets the flag out, they have someone else waiting for them on the other side.

Bastion - Core
Bastion had a cool design and look, but I found the fighting disappointing because it was nothing but a mad dash to the other persons core, bases were nearly irrelevant.

Castle fighters - Capture the Flag
I liked the design, it actually had a castlish design. I felt that there was way too many recourse items...

Galactic Parasites - Core
Not sure on this one... Perhaps with more players, but with how few we had it felt too easy for the parasites.

Green Eggs and Ham - Nexus
I love old classics... But this just doesn't fit the bill. My team was getting demolished, then we started killing ourselves in our pepper/salt shaker and nearly won.

Hardcastle - Capture the Flag

Hunters Revival - Nexus
I found it was too easy to sit in the center and wait for someone to try to get to the nexus.

KillYouHere - Capture the Flag
It was too hard to get in and out of bases, it would easily become a stalemate.

Picture Frame - Nexus

Qal'ah - Core

Seige - Core

Star Castle - Core

Wub - Bitmatch

Re: May Contest Discussion

No more discussion on the maps?

You do not have to use the template and comment on every one.

You can just say something simple like:

RepairBot is too vicious on the level 'Assassination'. :)

Re: May Contest Discussion

I only liked castle fighters...
Assassination - Zone Control
glitchy. Good concept, but rather poorly executed. Its either really easy or really hard, but its totally imbalanced every way. The art is... not good looking. 3/10

Bastion - Core
It has engineer, so it automatically gets docked three points. Too much space. Too hard to get anywhere. The level is tedious by design. It looks okay, but plays terrible. 2/10

Castle fighters - Capture the Flag
This is the only one I think is okay. The aesthetics could use some work but at least they're there. The level is like, actually playable or something, which is apparently pretty rare. 6/10

Galactic Parasites - Core
-3 for engineer. absolutely average, for a below average level. Unbalanced teams and crappy aesthetics, with a stupid bottleneck that everyone has to go through. 1/10

Green Eggs and Ham - Nexus
-3 for engineer. And its a teamed nexus. A teamed nexus with engineer. And it looks like a face. The artwork (never use barriers to draw) doesn't even look like what its supposed to look like. -4/10

Hardcastle - Capture the Flag
too big. And turrets everywhere. And pretty much no interaction with the enemy team? Feels like a knrling emperors revenge. 2/10

Hunters Revival - Nexus
score cap is too low. bottlenecks and... what is this? random hostile turrets shooting at resourcitems? and the spawns are wacky.
4/10

KillYouHere - Capture the Flag
Um. Its almost... an attempt? too many turrets no strategy. Easy to avoid the turrets too. 2/10.

Picture Frame - Nexus
this is, um. A nice novelty. It works for what it is. 4/10

Qal'ah - Core
um. More bottlenecks. The arabic is cool, except that its pretty much like just looking at it on a piece of paper because the map has no gameplay. Plus it being based on chance whether you'll get to the right enemy core...2/10

Seige - Core
I spawned in the middle of the map? Pretty average either way. 3/10

Star Castle - Core
why are these levels so huge.

Wub - Bitmatch
Like seriously.

Re: May Contest Discussion

My reviews.

Assassination - Zone Control
I don't see how the theme fits here, and the concept is nice of having an enemy team of bots, but there were too many player teams. 6/10.

Bastion - Core
This was WAY too big for me. This would seem like a nice Team Bitmatch map if there were enough players. 6/10.

Castle fighters - Capture the Flag
This one was nice, not too big, but still challenging. The gameplay was nice and would seem to be good for all game types. 8/10

Galactic Parasites - Core
Blue had such a disadvantage. Their cores were right in the open, and the red ones were closed away. 4/10

Green Eggs and Ham - Nexus
This has no fit into the theme at all, but the gameplay (if people play right, not camping in spawns) and the engineer can have some crazy turrets and players and everything everywhere. Hectic but fun. 6/10

Hardcastle - Capture the Flag
Again, blue has a disadvantage. The concept is nice, but it feels too much like a dungeon to me. 4/10

Hunters Revival - Nexus
This one, although the theme doesnt fit, is really nice because it ends up being a territory war for the nexus area, and it is a fun fight. 9/10

KillYouHere - Capture the Flag
This one, even though it doesnt fit the theme has nice gameplay. But this should have been disqualified because the designer had his/her name right smack in the middle of the map. Thanks Mufasa. 0.000000000000000000000001/10

Picture Frame - Nexus
This one was challenging, fun, and silly all in 1. This doesnt fit the theme, so i cant rate it 10/10. I give it 6.5/10

Qal'ah - Core
This was an interesting map, and i have to give credit to be able to have lines that smooth in Bitfighter, and it actually spells "castle", so it kinda fits the theme. 8.5/10.

Seige - Core
This one fit the theme, had a nice concept, but had poor design. 7.5/10

Star Castle - Core
Too big. Doesn't fit theme. almost no gameplay at all. 0.0001/10

Wub - Bitmatch
C'mon, Opti. This was too obvious that it was you. No fitting in the theme, but it would be a nice filler. 3.5/10

__________________End Summary____________________
It was a good contest, but some didn't even make sense at all. If i may suggest a theme, Speedzone Madness. Anyway, this is Lone Wolf, signing out.

Dude, it said keep yourself anonymous...
Little Apple wrote:cool map. BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?????

It means "Castle"

Lone Wolf wrote:I don't see how the theme fits here, and the concept is nice of having an enemy team of bots, but there were too many player teams

It's a giant castle. Duh. And I'd assume that the designer thought there would be more than four people playing at a time.
Lone Wolf wrote:This one, even though it doesnt fit the theme has nice gameplay. But this should have been disqualified because the designer had his/her name right smack in the middle of the map. Thanks Mufasa

It kinda fits the theme. It has castle turrets outside the bases (lol). And, that's not the designer's name. I know who made that one, it's not him xD
Lone Wolf wrote:Doesn't fit theme

Maybe "Space Castle" xD
Lone Wolf wrote:C'mon, Opti. This was too obvious that it was you

Re: May Contest Discussion

Assassination - Zone Control
4 / 10 : With the score limit of 2, game play quickly ends in less then a minute most of the time. Teleporter paths is faster with less turrets in the way, putting red and pink team a small disadvantage.
Bastion - Core
9 / 10 : Looks good, and if there is enough active players (3 vs 3 or more), it can play good as well.
Castle fighters - Capture the Flag
7 / 10: This level could of make use of polygon walls, because some ends of barriers looks odd. Game plays very good.
Galactic Parasites - Core
2 / 10 : Teams are unbalanced. Red spawn very close to red cores, and Blue spawn far away from blue cores. Tiny space of red base makes it hard for blue to attack. in 5 vs 5 or more, red team will most likely win about 90% of time.
Green Eggs and Ham - Nexus
3 / 10 : It might look good, but such suicide to rack up more flags where enemy cannot go to.
Hardcastle - Capture the Flag
3 / 10 : Too big, and the bases is quite too strong, especially with players repairing.
Hunters Revival - Nexus
6 / 10 : Having so many turrents often means having to use cloak to capture flags.
KillYouHere - Capture the Flag
4 / 10 : Flags sometimes returns to the top or bottom making often make it so easy to capture.
Picture Frame - Nexus
8 / 10 : Very cool ideas, be sure to destroy both cores, then get the timing right, Nexus only open for one second. The open middle space may be a problem.
Qal'ah - Core
6 / 10 : The random teleport to any 2 cores makes it harder to defend
Seige - Core
8 / 10 : Good gameplay, randomly spawning in the middle may have a effect of reducing ability to defend.
Star Castle - Core
1 / 10 : Too big, and gameplay often end less then 30 seconds with only one weak core.
Wub - Bitmatch
5 / 10 : This level is kind of too big, only useful for 20 or more players.
