August Level Design Contest Theme

karamazovapy wrote:This month's contest theme is: Mythology

Design a level inspired by mythology. Make players snatch the flag out of Prometheus' liver, recreate the Odyssey as a dungeon, build the Bifrost Bridge into Asgard, design a Chupacabra game of rabbit...you have the entire world and historical timeline to choose from! Create a level inspired by a mythological story.

You must submit:
(1) Level of any Gametype
(1+) Mythological reference
(Optional) A description of how your map is related to the myth, particularly if it isn't obvious.

Your design may be superficially related (as in an "art" map), gameplay may recreate events, or the general concept may just be "inspired" by a myth. Maps will be judged for gameplay, aesthetics, innovation, and execution.

Note: Players are welcome to submit multiple entries, with the understanding that only one may be voting-eligible.

Maps must be PM'ed by: 11:59 PM, Thursday, August 19th.
By the Power of Grayskull!

Gah! I was hoping I wouldn't have to actually think for this contest.

But whatever. I'll give it my best shot.

If you're struggling for inspiration, you might try wandering around here. It's a searchable encyclopedia of mythology from around the world. Not a bad way to waste some time just for the heck of it, either.

Ten Days Left!! Levels you start early are easier to complete on time...

I think I'll pass on this one...

I made a map... Kinda. I started a map. Then I realized that my rudimentary knowledge of any mythology period simply doesn't suffice for my idea. Maybe I'll think of something simple for it, but don't expect one from me.

I'm not making a map, but I have two good ideas I'd be willing to share. At least one of them is not Airlock.

Re: August Level Design Contest Theme

I'm going to be gone through the weekend, so I won't be able to give any reminders to get to work...

I'll just say this:
Contests are more fun when there are a lot of maps. Everyone has fun looking at them, even if they kind of suck. You don't have to submit the greatest map ever made to participate. We've all made good maps and everybody knows this, so submitting a lousy entry isn't tarnishing your image or your skill as a level designer. It's okay to submit an entry for fun, knowing it's kind of crappy. To be honest, I've gotten much more entertainment out of the very worst entries than the "pretty good" ones. If you've got the client installed, you should make a map and send it in. Don't let the number of votes it gets impact your self esteem in either direction - it's all in fun.

Re: August Level Design Contest Theme

I'm back in the states with the internets, and the soon-to-be contest server is looking pretty naked. Anybody working on an entry? I'll launch the server for the heck of it, but we don't have nearly enough for voting.

Re: August Level Design Contest Theme

I have been surprisingly occupied for an August, but I'll throw something together over the next couple of days for it. SC2 seems to be absorbing all of my gaming time.

Re: August Level Design Contest Theme

Its a tough topic, but also a lot of things are randomly stacking up against people. I'm sure the release of SC2, as qui said, doesn't make anything easier.

Folks have about 24 hours left! If you can make a map and send it in, please do.

Finished my map! The gameplay is most likely horrendous, but hopefully people will have some fun with it.

I think I would make another map... but I have no more ideas. The one I eventually did do just popped into my mind.

Re: August Level Design Contest Theme

After much ado, the Contest Server is up!

There's some fun stuff in there. Discussion will go up when I get back to AZ (I'm leaving for the epic drive in about an hour). We've got some first time contestants, a couple level gens, and just some general experimentation, so take a look, play through everything a couple times, and be kind to your fellow man when you review.

As always, the levelchangepassword is in the MMYY format.

MMYY? What??
The bottom statement is false.
The top statement is true.
