September Level Design Contest Theme

karamazovapy wrote:This month's contest theme is: Legendary Levelgens

Design a level that utilizes a levelgen script. Don't worry - it's much easier than you think! You know you've been meaning to figure levelgens out for a while now, anyway. Check out the levelgen tutorial here, and you can be up and levelgenning in an hour.

You must submit:
(1) Level of any Gametype
(1) Levelgen file

Your levelgen script may be as simple or complex as you like. If you get stuck or would like help, I am more than happy to assist, as (I'm sure) are several of our local codemonkeys. Maps will be judged for gameplay, aesthetics, innovation, and execution.

Note: Players are welcome to submit multiple entries, with the understanding that only one may be voting-eligible.

Maps must be PM'ed by: 11:59 PM, Thursday, September 23rd.

Folks don't have to use the framework I set out in the tutorial, but it's a quick, easy head start.

Next month's theme will be way less work, I promise.

Cool, I'm on a strict schedule, so it'll take some time before I get a map up. Should have it done by the date.

Might as well begin Production now seeing as this is the time I'll have the least homework.

Meh, I've been looking for an excuse to learn levelgens anyway.

its a competition that will actually take effort, which, unfortunately, scares people off.

Stay tuned for next months competition: Robots!

Actually, I've had next month's easy/fun theme in mind since mythology.

Hint: We've had it once (and only once) before.

3-4 Days Left!

I know this is a tough one, so any levels I get or have that use levelgens, I'll host. I'm not sure we'll have enough to vote on at this rate, though.

ITS ALIVE! MWAHAHAHAHA!

In other words, I somehow managed to get a level to work, instead of writing a paper...

I'm going to polish it up a bit then send it in.

Re: September Level Design Contest Theme

yeh I had that same choice and did the paper instead...

My level so far has 1 levelgen item, I hope I can get it polished with lots more than just one by the due date.

Re: September Level Design Contest Theme

meh...let's be honest about this round. it's a really involved theme. it's asking pretty much everyone to do something (and possibly learn something) they've never done before. because of that, I'm not expecting any last minute entries. I've received one submission each from three different people and I've got at least one level to offer (although I might spend some time tomorrow afternoon putting another together).

I'm going to host every levelgen level I have in my possession, but I'll leave it up to folks if we want to try to do a single round of voting or not.

I've been crazy busy and time has been running away from me this month. I assume the same is true for everybody, to varying degrees.

With all that out of the way, I think people are going to have a lot of fun playing around with these levels. There's some fun variety built in.

Re: September Level Design Contest Theme

Due to a minor technicality, Airlock will not be included in this round (it doesn't have a levelgen). However, I am _very_ interested to see what folks have done. I consider 4 levels from 4 designers a very good turnout given the theme.

Re: September Level Design Contest Theme

I'd have to say, I think my entry sucks.

But, I'm very glad I did it. It was honestly fairly easy. But, now I can do it. And I must say, it will be VERY useful in the future. Basically, even if my entry was just me messing around, I came out the better for it.

Re: September Level Design Contest Theme

mine would have been finished at the last minute. The plans for the levelgen and the skeleton map part have been completed. IF I only had until friday night at 11:59 pst, I may have been able to get it in. Ill see how the rest of the day plays out, maybe I can get something working, but it will be simple.

Re: September Level Design Contest Theme

I'll still host it if you send it to me tomorrow.

Barring any VPS problems (which I'm about to check), the contest server will go live tonight with NINE levels total, including new levels, old levels, and updated levels.

Re: September Level Design Contest Theme

Nine? Awesome. Were you wrong about last minute entries, or did you come up with some more maps on your own? Does "old" mean levels we've seen before? You don't really have to answer these, because we'll see soon enough.

like I said, I'm hosting any levelgen levels I've got - which includes ones we've seen before...although I've just done something absolutely brilliant, which brings the total up to ten.

+1 = 11

I promise by tomorrow, maybe even tonight, If I can get something else very important done as well in less than 30 minutes. That will leave about an hour and 30 minutes to coding, since I already got my ideas down. I really would like to contribute to the stack, and if I don't get my map in expect a pm tomorrow :)

The contest server is up. Sadly, I have to work 7 out of the next 8 nights, so I'll only be able to log in so often.

Note that the "surprises" on Poltergeist are intentional.
