Bot files not working for me

I am trying to add files to the "robot file" of 19e.

I made a copy of "projectileshooter" and rename it "creep". Since the second is an exact copy of the first, both are .bot

I then open up Bitfighter, open the level editor, and test a level I'm making. When I type in the command: "/addbot projectileshooter", a projectileshooter appears no problem.

When I type in the commands: "/addbot creep" or "/addbot creep.bot" neither work.

Why?
BAM! I'm back.

Re: Bot files not working for me

Hi furbuggy,

If a bot fails to run, there is an error somewhere (even if it seems unlikely). Pay attention to the error message that the server gives when loading it with /addbot. If it says something like 'not found' then that means that the file doesn't exist or it's in the wrong place.

Other errors can be with the code in the file itself; if this is the case, then a more detailed error will spit out to the bitfighter_server.log in your user preferences folder. If you have this more detailed message, we can hunt down the problem easier.

Hi Raptor, thanks for the quick reply.

It says that it's not found, but the file of that name, (it is indeed a .bot file) is in the robots folder. Is there somewhere else it should be? Seems unlikely.
BAM! I'm back.

Re: Bot files not working for me

I would try two more things then:

1. Make sure the filename is really spelled correctly and ends with a .bot extension. You need to make sure that your OS (Windows?) is showing you the file extensions. Sometimes what happens is Windows will hide the file extension, and when you rename a file to 'creep.bot' it is really called 'creep.bot.txt' but you don't see the .txt.

2. Make sure it is the right 'robots' folder. You can see where Bitfighter is loading its files from the Diagnostics screen: press F7 in-game to activate it, F7 again to cycle through the pages

Re: Bot files not working for me

Ah, the second suggestion was useful. I am using Windows 7. It looks like Bitfighter is trying to use the appdata folder under my computer's user name. (c:\users\furbuggy\appdata\bitfighter\robots) is there anyway I can change this to the normal bitfighter folder?
BAM! I'm back.

Re: Bot files not working for me

There are two ways to run bitfighter now:
1. standalone mode
2. installation mode

If you used the normal installer, then you are in installation mode which means all resources are pulled from %APPDATA%. This is because multiple users might want to edit their own files so the game resources (all except 'sfx' maybe?) are pulled from your user preferences (appdata) folder now.

You can use standalone (or portable) mode by downloading and using the standalone archive that is provided on the downloads page.

Re: Bot files not working for me

Bitfighter seems to copy resources both in the C:/Program Files/Bitfighter and C:/Bla/appdata folders :)

In this case, as raptor said, the appdata one is correct (I think)
