December Level Design Contest Theme

CONTEST OUT OF NOWHERE!
karamazovapy wrote:This month's contest theme is: COOL CURVES

Design a level that uses curves! They can be barriers, goal zones, or loadout zones. Not everything needs to be curved, but curves must be a part of your design. Bonus points if your curves impact gameplay! You are welcome to use the Zap Curve Tool, Curvegen, or calculate the necessary points manually.

You must submit:
(1) Level of any Gametype that features curves.

Note: Players are welcome to submit multiple entries, with the understanding that only one may be voting-eligible. Entries must be brand new and remain anonymous until voting concludes.

Maps must be PM'ed by:
11:59 PM, Thursday, December 15th.

Contest Party:
10:00 PM Eastern, Friday, December 16th.

Your timing is impeccable! I'm planning on using your Lua curve tool as an example of how to create editor plugins in 016 -- shortly after this contest is over, curves will be much easier to make!

Re: December Level Design Contest Theme

Maybe once people give curves a shot with the current setup, they'll be extra appreciative of the 016 upgrade!

The levelgen-themed contest didn't win a ton of people over to using levelgens, but maybe this will encourage increased curvature. Scoliosis. Basically, I want everyone to get scoliosis.

Yeah, I can't get your curve.levelgen to work properly, and by properly I mean at all. And yes, I followed the directions correctly.

Re: December Level Design Contest Theme

I just re-tested it.

Go to thread.

Click "Select all" icon in code window.

Copy selected text.

Paste into text editor.

Save file as curve.levelgen in the appropriate LevelDir folder.

Edit new level in Bitfighter.

Enter curve.levelgen as Levelgen Script in Level Parameters menu.

Press Ctrl+R from editor.

See circle appear.

Experience no difficulty.

Re: December Level Design Contest Theme

I have something to add to that:
If you hit control+r and the green circle dissapears the circle wall will still be in the same location as the green circle before. The prevent this, simply remove curve.levelgen from the levelgen in the level parameters. This is the problem BlackBird and I have had.

Re: December Level Design Contest Theme

Right. The script continues to run when the level starts as long as you have it listed in the level parameters.

Got it.

I did everything right except notice that I was still running version 015 instead of 015a.

Whoops.

I don't like curves... Bitfighter isn't meant to be an organic game...

Hell, Airlock didn't need curves, so why should any lesser level?

Bitfighter maps and women.

Re: December Level Design Contest Theme

Just a reminder - you have a little less than two weeks to make a map!

I have received three entries so far.

Also, remember to keep your levels secret. Do not post them publicly or tell other people about your level before the contest!

Just a reminder - you have a bit over 48 hours left to submit a contest entry or filler level!

We have a nice number, but more is better!

It is better to submit if you think you haven't submitted yet. If you submit the same level the second time, then it will probably be assumed to be an update to your map.

Now that the contest server is up for more then a day, i think it is probably too late to submit a level for contest server. Now that several people are probably guessing that "Lone Wolf" haven't (yet?) submitted a level to contest server.

If you submit your level, make sure your level is in the contest server on the first day contest server shows up, the sooner it is checked, the easier it is to throw that map in without anyone knowing which level is made by who.

I think it is either kind of late but can be submitted, or it may be too late to submit

Re: December Level Design Contest Theme

Even if the level is accepted, and put in the contest server, everyone will instantly notice the new level and know who made it. So yea. It's a bit late. But it could be a nice filler level!
