01:16:00Watusimoto Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
02:00:00raptor1.79 x 10^12 furlongs per fortnight
05:44:00raptorzoomber_ibm: I hate issue 124
05:44:00raptor(coding it, at least...)
05:45:00Watusimoto_ Quit (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
05:46:00raptorI have tried to code it twice now, and I'm still unhappy with my partially finished solution
05:52:00sam686zoomber_ibm's idle time: 4d 2h 20m 28s (i think zoomber is idling a long time now...)
05:53:00raptori wonder if he has his laptop on IRC and left for vacation
05:53:00sam686i think zoomber has 2 computer, laptop and ibm desktop with hackintosh, i think...
05:55:00sam686could be in vacation, possibly, and forgot to turn off computer maybe...

05:59:00raptorsorry, laptop hardware failure
05:59:00raptormor elike buggy firmware
05:59:00sam686my guess is graphics problem? or what?
05:59:00raptorthe IRQs on my laptop act up and will randomly disable
06:00:00raptorusually that means wireless goes out, but lately it has messed up the keyboard
06:00:00sam686laptop getting old?
06:00:00raptornope, i think it shipped with buggy hardware
06:00:00raptorit's my work laptop: dell e6510
06:01:00sam686does bumping or shaking the laptop cause errors, or does it just happen randomly?
06:02:00raptorjust happens randomly
06:02:00raptorno physical trauma required
06:02:00raptor:)
06:03:00sam686maybe list all of your hardware devices?
06:04:00raptorwell, i'm on linux, and i consistently get an IRQ timing error in the kernel messages
06:04:00sam686does it show whick IRQ or anythign specific?
06:05:00raptoryes, it does, but it changes
06:05:00raptori am hoping dell will release a BIOS update - many of my coworkers have similar problems
06:06:00sam686keyboard stops working problems as well?
06:06:00raptorwell...
06:07:00raptorthat has only started happening when I added the kernel boot parameter 'irqpoll'
06:07:00raptorbut all the other problems went away
06:07:00raptorirqpoll is supposed to work around buggy firmware with IRQ problems
06:08:00raptoroh wow, they did release a new BIOS
06:10:00raptori'll have to try it and report back tomorrow
06:12:00raptori'm gonna try something crazy - update my DVD firmware from a windows VM in linux :)
06:13:00sam686i don't think a virtual maching have direct access to DVD firmware (not sure)
06:13:00raptori don't think so either - but I'm gonna see what happens
06:15:00raptoroh my goodness, it worked!!
06:16:00sam686well, then i guess that virtual machine software lets windows have direct access to dvd drive...
06:17:00raptoryeah, i'm surprised
06:18:00sam686but, dvd firmware probably won't fix computer problems (maybe it might fix problems related to DVD drive)
06:19:00raptorno it won't - but i saw an update for it
06:21:00sam686maybe your computer have a problem with one of a device sending junk irq or something, or it might be drivers problems...
06:21:00sam686probably software drivers problems if it happens to many computer of the same computer..
06:22:00raptori don't htink it is drivers problem because we all run different OSes (some openSUSE 11.3, 11.4, Windows 7)
06:23:00raptorin fact, usually OEMs work around the hardware problems they fix with better software drivers for windows - which means us linux users are stuck
06:24:00sam686so, does the windows ever blue screens for you on computer?
06:24:00koda has joined
06:26:00sam686which drivers was updated that have the fix, adn is it possible to disable that driver?
06:26:00raptori have no idea - i dual boot windows 7 on this laptop, but i only use windows once every few weeks
06:27:00raptorno blue screens ever
06:27:00raptornever had wireless problems on windows
06:32:00raptorcan i show you my ugly hack for issue 124?
06:32:00sam686ok..
06:32:00raptorhttp://pastie.org/2766184
06:32:00raptorso ugly...
06:32:00raptorthis is one of the worst hacks i've written in a long time...
06:33:00raptori am even ashamed
06:34:00raptorthis hack is what happens when I code late at night...
06:34:00sam686what happens if a line gets too long (one player zaps 200 robots)?
06:34:00raptorit is using method drawWrappedText
06:34:00raptorit just doesn't show...
06:35:00sam686the problem is a long too long may overflow mDisplayMessage array from using strcpy
06:35:00raptoroh yeah, forgot about that...
06:35:00raptor2048 is the limit i think
06:38:00sam686one problem with zapped messages is when there is like 20 players, you only have less then 1 second to read them, when every players are zapping..
06:38:00raptoryes
06:39:00sam686maybe in a non-bitmatch (like CTF flag dropped messages) maybe just ignore all zap messages unless it has your name in it..
06:39:00raptorthis one takes into account the message length: http://pastie.org/2766213
06:41:00koda Quit (Quit: koda)
06:43:00sam686i guess never mind about buffer overflow, .c_str() : message, sizeof(mDisplayMessage[0])); // Use strncpy to avoid buffer overflows
06:44:00sam686but still, without that fix, that line will just get cropped when long enough..
06:44:00raptoryeah
06:46:00raptori hate this hack
06:46:00raptori think i'm going to go to bed...
06:46:00raptorgood night sam686
06:48:00sam686ok, i think combining multiple messages into one zapped message can make messages get overcrouded (too many text) i think...
06:49:00raptori think so too
06:49:00sam686i can show you one screenshot of my testing it (in 60 seconds)
06:50:00raptorok
06:53:00sam686http://208.107.52.15/bitfighter/111029screenshot_21.png
06:54:00sam686while it slows down messages, it does seem to get more crowded..
06:54:00raptoryes, i agree
06:55:00raptorwas it Zap! that had this implemented?
06:55:00sam686and, I don't think players care about seeing who zapped who, only care about you zapped someone or someone zapped out?
06:55:00sam686yes, but old Zap had only one line of who zapped who, who, who
06:55:00raptori think it was a dedicated line at the top, wasn't it?
06:55:00sam686probably yes..
06:55:00raptorbecause that is something we could do, too
06:56:00raptoralthough I am starting to think that we are getting little benefit from so much work...
06:56:00raptori don't really want to push down server messages
06:57:00sam686it is something to think about over night, as that seems not right...
06:57:00raptoryep
06:57:00raptormaybe we can ask watusimoto in the morning
06:57:00raptorok good night sam686, i'm falling asleep
06:57:00sam686ok, night.

20:20:00raptorhi Watusimoto
20:20:00raptorI think I wrote the hack-iest i've ever written last night for issue 124
20:21:00raptorbut we now know what the behaviour would kind of look like: http://208.107.52.15/bitfighter/111029screenshot_21.png
20:21:00Watusimotohi
20:21:00Watusimotoglad you are so proud of your work
20:21:00raptori am ashamed
20:21:00Watusimotogood lord
20:22:00raptorif you think that picture is bad, look at the code: http://pastie.org/2766213
20:22:00Watusimotoummm.... not sure what to say
20:22:00Watusimotothat's pretty appalling
20:22:00Watusimotowell at least the code's on 45 lines long
20:23:00Watusimotothat's short enought to grok and to rewrite sometime in the future
20:23:00Watusimotobut the question is what are we going to do about that screenshot
20:23:00raptoryep
20:23:00raptorthe results are kind of bad
20:24:00raptorsam686 and I think that Zap! had a dedicated line at the top of the messages just for 'kill' messages
20:24:00raptorbut we have module indicators there...
20:25:00raptorand I'm not sure I want to push server messages down a line just for this
20:25:00raptorthis
20:25:00raptorthis horrific monstrosity that I wrote
20:28:00WatusimotoI don't object to the code so much as the screenshot
20:28:00Watusimotomaybe we just revert and close the case
20:28:00raptorreally? i'm appalled I even wrote that
20:28:00WatusimotoI'd call that a success
20:28:00raptormade feel all dirty inside - like I was programming PERL
20:29:00Watusimotothe only way I can think to save it would be to change the messages to S_Bot killed sam686 12 times
20:29:00raptorwell, if it's a large bitmatch, that won't work
20:29:00raptorlots of player names in a row...
20:29:00raptordifferent names, i mean
20:30:00Watusimotoright, but at least it won't look so idiotic
20:30:00Watusimotono offence
20:30:00raptorhaha
20:30:00raptori completely agree
20:30:00Watusimotos_bot killed sam686 (12 times), watusimoto (2times) and raptor
20:31:00raptorwhat i meant was, Watusimoto killed raptor, sam68, karamazovap, BFLogBo, zoomber_ib, LordDV, kod
20:31:00raptorso lots of single kill different names
20:31:00WatusimotoWatusimoto killed raptor, sam68, karamazovap, BFLogBo, zoomber_ib, LordDV, and koda
20:32:00WatusimotoWatusimoto killed raptor, sam68, karamazovap, BFLogBo, zoomber_ib, LordDV, and then koda
20:32:00raptor(i had removed the last character to not alert them...) :)
20:32:00Watusimotooops
20:32:00WatusimotoWatusimoto killed raptor, sam68, karamazovap, BFLogBo, zoomber_ib, LordDV, and then kod
20:32:00Watusimotosorry kod
20:32:00Watusimotoa
20:32:00koda'lo
20:33:00Watusimotojust usng your name in vain
20:35:00raptorsooo... I could add even more text processing to try and reduce the messages... but i really don't want to
20:35:00raptori'm sure I slowed down the displayMessage method by a magnitude already...
20:35:00kodai feel abused D:
20:36:00Watusimotoah heck, it's all client side\
20:36:00Watusimotoso... revert?
20:38:00LordDVG Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
20:40:00raptorif we were to take ratio of good/bad of this enhancement would it be > 1 or < 1?
20:41:00Watusimoto< 1
20:41:00raptorthenr evert
20:41:00raptorthen revert
20:41:00Watusimoto If you think the idea has no future, and want to throw in the towel, i'll back you. You can revert your code, add a comment to the case, and close it with "won't implement". to badd there's no "we tried it and it sucks" status.
20:41:00Watusimotonot every idea is a good idea
20:41:00Watusimotoeven if they sound good
20:41:00raptori can actually create those statuses (statii?)
20:42:00Watusimotocan you?
20:42:00Watusimotothat might be a good one to have
20:42:00raptorwhich one?
20:42:00Watusimotowe tried it and it sucks
20:42:00Watusimotothere's already a won't implement
20:46:00raptorhttp://code.google.com/p/bitfighter/issues/detail?id=124
20:47:00raptorIs that status OK for you? ^^
20:48:00raptorI actually didn't commit my code changes - I was too ashamed
