00:17:16Little_Appleive had an idea for a song bouncing around in my head for the past few days
00:18:07raptoractually, i think this has to do with his business: https://stage517.wordpress.com/
00:19:03Little_Applesooo??? thats it?
00:19:11raptorha! he mentions 1/2 tau day

00:19:58raptorhttp://halftauday.com/
00:20:25Little_Appleis that something _k mentioned?

00:26:04Little_Appleoh i think i get it
00:26:25Little_Appleso the real constant to a circle would be tau and they're calling pi day half tau day?
00:26:30raptoryes
00:26:35Little_Appleoh ok :P
00:26:40raptorit's a movement to replace pi in schools with tau
00:26:45Little_Applelol
00:26:53raptorbecause tau makes more sense
00:27:07Little_Applebut pi is more universially recognized
00:27:16Little_Applejust like my spelling ability
00:27:17raptoryes, which is the problem
00:27:20raptorha
00:28:00Little_Appleso tau uses the diameter rather than the radius?
00:28:10raptorno, tau uses the radius
00:28:14Little_Appleoh ok
00:28:23Little_Appleill look at it some more
00:28:49raptoryou should watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jG7vhMMXagQ
00:28:56raptorfor an easier introduction
00:29:12Little_Appleoh??? im not exactly in the position to watch a video atm
00:29:16Little_Applebut ill look into it later
00:29:18Little_Apple:P
00:29:31Little_Appleit is interesting
00:30:05raptorso i'm debating - should i continue to work on learning how to build android apps? or should i find something to further the 018 release?
00:30:10raptoror maybe i'll take a nap
00:30:26Little_Applei think the 018 thing might be the best
00:30:42Little_Applebut if you are too tired you might mess up the code
00:30:47Little_Appleso...
00:30:58Little_Applechug an energy drink and code.
00:31:03Little_Appleand nap when you crash
00:32:21Little_Appleoooh waaait...
00:33:21Little_Applethe formula i have screaming in my head is to find the area of a circle...
00:33:27Little_Appleyea i get it now.
00:34:21Little_Applebut i dont see why it would be more convienient that pi

03:12:35sam686So far 2 Hard Disk died on me. Now, I kind of put in an old sata laptop hard drive (from my brother's broken laptop) into my desktop that had a dead hard disk removed. The problem with the old hard drive I put in: its showing signs of dying. I used speedFan's SMART hard disk monitor tools in windows. http://www.hddstatus.com/hdrepshowreport.php?ReportCode=6243440&ReportVerification=1C5B3B68
03:13:30raptoroh no!
03:15:39sam686also it appears to say the hard disk has at one time, went extremely hot, at 63 degrees celcius..
03:16:19sam686that was probably back in the days the hard disk was still in the laptop, and maybe the laptop got very hot from being outside in the hot sun?
03:18:18raptormaybe the laptop CPU was being used too much?
03:18:42raptoror the fan stopped inside and everything else heated up
03:19:16sam686probably, as that old laptop has a dead fan, then a wobbly power cord connector, then a half-broken keyboard, then a cracked lcd screen.
03:19:27sam686oh and a dead battery.
03:23:05raptorha
03:24:41sam686and that old laptop started to have wobbly USB ports, making USB failing to work anymore... now it becomes garbage laptop i guess..
03:25:11sam686but I took the hard disk out of that laptop
03:26:29raptorsay, how did you get those SMART monitor tools?
03:27:12sam686for windows: I download just a "SpeedFan" that has a SMART portion, as well as being able to change the fan's speed and monitor temperature too..
03:28:54sam686another think I discovered is my GeForce 6200 could get as high as 105 degrees Celcius - above poiling point. ( my GPU has temperature sensor, but only a heatsink without fan)
03:29:17raptorwow
03:29:19raptorthat's hot
03:29:49sam686http://sam686.maxhushahn.com/upload/GPU_GeForce6200_Celcius.png the sharp drop of telperature is when I blow at the GPU heatsink.
03:32:14sam686I think linux might have something like "Smartmontools" or something similar..
03:37:06raptoryes, i have those - and it is running as a daemon... i wonder if it is logging something
03:47:43sam686try smartctl -a /dev/sda (i was reading https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Smartmontools )
03:54:10raptordid we fix any of these bugs?: http://bitfighter.org/wiki/index.php/Running_Bug_List
03:56:36sam686number 16?
03:56:44raptorha
03:56:48raptori can remove that...
03:57:06raptorit was a placeholder for a bug you mentioned that i forgot to write down
03:57:13raptorbut i forgot the bug, too
03:57:43sam686"Ship::isInZone always returns NULL" i might have fixed that mostly by reverting to an older code..
03:57:49raptorok
03:58:13raptori crossed them off
04:04:12raptori'll fix spybug reporting...
04:04:26raptoror at least try..
04:16:53raptordoes inserting a weapon into the database for you not put the name as 'name' in stats_player_shots?
04:18:34sam686will check, done compiling..
04:18:51raptori think something in watusimoto's xmacros messed it up...
04:20:39raptorso my fix for spy bug stats i just pushed is still broken, but because of xmacro problem somewhere..
04:23:15BFLogBot - Commit 21fb202642f3 | Author: buckyballreaction | Log: Fix spy bug stats

04:31:20raptoryes
04:31:31raptorshould not be "name", should be name
04:31:38raptor(no quotes)
04:31:39sam686weaponName = {"name", "name", "name", "name", "name", "name", "name", "name"}?
04:31:43raptorhaha, yep

04:34:49raptorneed to recompile master with that change...
04:35:38sam686i can always test locally (my client / server compiled with mysql)
04:35:55raptorwe've been writing "name" for players shots stats for a while now on master
04:37:09sam686it works now (no "name")
04:37:26raptoroh good
04:37:47raptorok, i'm going to bed
04:37:50raptornight!
04:37:53sam686the same could have happened to sqlite... but hwo uses sqlite?
04:38:01raptorthat's how i tested...

15:40:24raptorsam686 and I found the problem though...

23:04:09Watusimotohi
23:04:17raptorhi
23:04:26Watusimotohope your laptop is still alive
23:04:32sam686hi hi
23:05:48Watusimotooh, that
23:05:49Watusimotook
23:06:03raptoryes - after his triumph he proceeded to walk on the android tablet
23:06:16Watusimotothis is the situation where someone started the game with -dedicated
23:06:19raptoryes
23:06:39Watusimotobut they also needed to set -rootdatadir
23:06:53Watusimoto(for some reason? is this really required?)
23:06:57raptoryes.. on my system rootdatadir is just considere the local dir
23:07:12raptorif not specified, i mean
23:07:15Watusimotowell, in this case that didn't work, so maybe that's priobelm #1
23:07:27raptormaybe it's directory permissions?
23:07:39Watusimotobut the real problem is the game just didn't run; iti didn't like the parameters, but didn't display an error message
23:07:47Watusimotoit just silently failed
23:08:13WatusimotoI recall sam686 saying that the problem might be that we don't get console output in release mode
23:08:49WatusimotoI looked briefly at the problem, and I *think* an error message should have printed, so the problem might be that the message is being supressed somehow
23:09:06Watusimotoit *might* be platform specific (assuming he was running windows)
23:09:19sam686i think there is 2 problems: 1. in windows, when installed with installer, it places a shortcut in start menu with -rootdatadir
23:09:22Watusimotothat's about all I can tell you at the moment
23:09:55sam6862. when starting a non-debug from command, it doesn't output nothing at all on command and runs like a completely seperate process..
23:09:56raptorso we need console output in release
23:10:50sam686many times, people forget about -rootdatadir when trying to start -dedicated, and the levels is located in rootdatadir path, not in bitfighter exe path..
23:11:38Watusimotook, so did a quick test on 017b release
23:11:48WatusimotoI can't get anything to print at cmd line
23:11:55Watusimoto-rules should dump tons of text
23:12:02Watusimoto-sfsdf should print error
23:12:10Watusimotonothing in either case
23:13:43sam686"console" subsystem mode might fix that, but if started from non-command window, it always displays a new command window that usually don't allow text input while bitfighter is running..
23:14:20WatusimotoI'm not sure I totally understand that comment

23:14:48Watusimotowe do some sort of special console thingy just to resolve this problem. Maybe that got disabled somehow?

23:14:51BFLogBot - Commit 1e36b6caf036 | Author: watusim...@bitfighter.org | Log: Ok, line color finially works!
23:14:59sam686linux appear to do it the right way: runs from console and output to console, and never opens new console window..
23:15:12Watusimotoyes
23:15:13raptor"console" subsystem is some option in vc++
23:16:07sam686problem with "console" subsystem in windows is, it opens new console window if started from non-console double clicking bitfighter.exe)
23:16:16raptorcould the output be printing elsewhere on windows? i know mac hijacks all console output and puts it into a separate program you have to start to view it
23:16:32raptorand, so the cmd window always pops up?
23:16:32WatusimotoI don't think so
23:16:48Watusimotocmd window does not pop up, at least when you run from cmd window
23:16:53sam686windows"
23:17:05sam686problem with windows subsystem is, can't use console..
23:17:53raptorsam686 is saying that if we compiled the release binary with "console" mode, the effect will be two things: 1. we'll see output when starting from a command prompt; 2. the cmd window will always pop up, even when double clicking an icon to start the app
23:18:39raptor is so happy Watusimoto fixed his Makefile
23:18:50Watusimoto:-)
23:19:12WatusimotoI have to compensate for introducing so many bugs somehow
23:19:35WatusimotoI thought we had resolved this at some point in the recent past
23:19:52raptori don't remember..
23:20:13sam686I never quite seen it resolved, even though I have seen some attempt to resolve it..
23:20:29raptordynamic_cast in LineItem:render() ??
23:20:47Watusimotoim main.cpp:
23:20:51Watusimoto/ Call this function when running game in console mode; causes output to be dumped to console, if it was run from one
23:20:51Watusimoto/ Loosely based on http://www.codeproject.com/KB/dialog/ConsoleAdapter.aspx
23:20:51Watusimotobool writeToConsole()
23:20:51Watusimoto{...
23:21:26Watusimotoadmittedly, it all looks like gobeldygook to me
23:21:49raptorha!
23:22:12raptoractually, you accidentally changed all the TABs in the Makefile to spaces... now it doesn't launch
23:22:15raptor is fixing
23:22:25Watusimotogood grief
23:22:30WatusimotoI so hate make
23:22:43Watusimotomy editor does that automatically
23:23:18WatusimotoI tried to edit in notepad, which would have preserved the tabs, but it got confused by the lack of \r s
23:23:34raptornotepad++?
23:23:38Watusimotonotepad
23:23:48Watusimotothen I moved on to textpad, which fixes tabs for me
23:23:59raptori thought the first rule of developing on Windows was never use built-in notepad
23:24:15Watusimotoit's fine for most things
23:24:25Watusimotoit just sucks
23:24:28raptorhaha
23:24:36sam686there might be one slight down side to using multiple spaces instead of tabs: bigger file size of source code.. I don't know if that slows down compiling or not..
23:24:57WatusimotoI doubt it
23:26:03sam686"inconsistant line ending" in some files...
23:26:10raptorthe downside is 'make'
23:26:19Watusimotototally agree
23:26:34Watusimotodid I hear some talk about moving to cmake
23:26:35raptorman, that's worse than python - python just makes sure you have the same whitespace
23:26:41raptoroh yes cmake
23:26:58Watusimotocmake - "sucks slightly less!"
23:27:23raptori think kaen might done something along those lines...
23:27:33raptoror maybe it was just me trying to convince him not to use autotools
23:28:09sam686if we not using autotools, what are we using instead? manualtools?
23:28:27raptorWatusimoto: did you have some goal in mind with the LineItem refactor?
23:28:42raptorwe are using raw 'make'
23:28:47Watusimotothe splitting?
23:28:51raptoryes
23:28:57Watusimotonot really
23:29:03raptorok
23:29:08Watusimototextitem and lineitem have really nothing in common
23:29:16Watusimotobesides they are both useless objects
23:29:32WatusimotoI stuck them together when I crated them due to laziness
23:29:38raptorfunction-less... i'm sure some level designers have had a use for them
23:29:47Watusimotoand I was looking at them today because I have some lua methods to add
23:29:53BFLogBot - Commit c104a39129aa | Author: buckyballreaction | Log: Oh where oh where have my TAB gone?
23:30:16Watusimotoit was something I've wanted to do for years
23:30:23Watusimotobasically a housekeeping task
23:30:39raptori like housekeeping
23:30:44raptormake me feel clean
23:31:53raptorinteresting: https://code.google.com/p/dualsubsystem/
23:35:20Watusimotoseems a bit hacky... .exe AND .com?
23:35:26raptoryep
23:38:03raptortotally hacky
23:48:46raptorwere there any other features we wanted for 018?
23:49:59Watusimotowell here's one to consider, though i don;t have time to discuss...
23:50:15Watusimotodo we want to rever the "kinetic" components of the modules?
23:50:26Watusimotojust think that over and we can discuss later
23:50:47raptori've asked players that - majority like them, just not the double-click part
23:50:53raptorok
23:50:56Watusimotoyou could do... heat seeker
23:50:59Watusimoto:-)
23:51:11Watusimotothat was the very first thing I wanted to add to zap
23:51:15raptoroh yeah!...
23:51:23raptorhmmm
23:51:29Watusimotoyou did a great job with the other stuff you;ve added
23:51:29raptorwill require math
23:51:35Watusimotojust tossing that out there
23:52:03Watusimotoanother thing we shjoudl consider is whether to add energy items to the editor
23:52:09Watusimotomy son keeps bugging me to do it
23:52:19Watusimotohe thinks they;re a positive addition to the game
23:52:21raptorthe dungeon game type?
23:52:43Watusimotothat's another thing that needs to happen sometime
23:52:44raptori.e. weren't we going to make a specific game type to unlock all the crazy
23:52:49Watusimotoyes
23:52:56Watusimotomore an overlya mode type
23:53:02raptorah
23:53:10raptorso at the code level, not a 'GameType'
23:53:11Watusimotoso you could have any gametype be a dungeon
23:53:20Watusimotomaybe a special?
23:53:21raptora Special?
23:53:25Watusimotoyes
23:53:26Watusimotothat
23:53:34raptorhmmm
23:54:47WatusimotoI'm on a detour at the moment, but you could add some lua methods if you wanted :-)
23:54:50raptorquick thought on engineered teleporter - should we have the health indicator turn all trackers to grey?
23:55:09raptorinstead of 75% or so..
23:55:16Watusimotomaybe
23:55:25Watusimotoit might be clearer
23:56:04Watusimotoanyway, the next major lua method I want to add is a generic geometry setter
23:56:09Watusimotoat the bfObject level
23:56:15raptoroooo
23:56:20Watusimototo set the geom of any object
23:56:36Watusimotowill take a series of points, F32s, or a table of points or F32s
23:56:50Watusimotoif you specify too few points, the cmd is ignored
23:56:59raptorhow do you envision that affecting the objects?
23:57:15Watusimotoif you specify too many (like 2 pts for a soccerball), only the first point is used
23:57:22Watusimotothe geom will ahve to update at the client end
23:57:33Watusimotoif that's what you mean
23:57:50raptori mean, what type of object manipulation do want to do with it
23:58:06raptori guess i'm not fully sure how changing the geom will affect the objects
