12:04:28raptorgood day
13:00:30watusimotohi\
13:00:38watusimotoI fell asleep AGAIN on the couch
13:01:13raptorhi
13:01:14watusimotobut this morning, I tested 019d with my non-crashy joystick, and found I could not reproduce the problem
13:01:21watusimotothe crashy problem
13:01:33watusimotoso it looks like it might really be related to my special joystick
13:01:35raptorI ate gingerbread cookies with red frosting and didn't sleep much at all the whole night
13:01:42watusimotointeresting
13:01:59watusimotowas there caffine in the frosting?
13:02:06raptorsame with the wife... we think it was the frosting, but not sure
13:02:12raptori have no idea
13:03:07raptori doubt it - my second born and I don't do to well with caffeine (I get headaches, he goes beserk then spirals into a tantrum feedback-loop)
13:03:44raptorit wasn't chocolate either
13:03:54raptorso it was your weird joystick the whole time?
13:08:21watusimotothere were two joystick issues; one was (I think) my weird joystick, the second (I think) was fixed by your recent changes
13:08:34raptorhuh
13:08:36raptorok
13:08:39raptorwell good
13:09:00watusimotothe second issue caused my son to futz with the joystick, tirggering the first problem, leading to immense frustration
13:09:30watusimoto(the first is the crash, the second is spurious button presses when moving the axes)
13:09:59watusimotoand I upgraded to the community version of visual studio, which will let me use plugins and otherwise enhance the coding environment
13:10:18watusimotoI also learned that, as a student, you have access to the full version of visual studio for free
13:10:40watusimotoif you care; it's a great ide (well, ok, a decent ide, but no one does a good job with c++)
13:11:19raptorthe full version? I haven't been too impressed with the express versions...
13:11:41watusimotowell, you probably won't like the full version then
13:11:44raptoralthough it is still probably better than gdb on the command line
13:11:56watusimotobut it lets you use plugins, which is the main thing missing from express that impacts our work
13:12:26watusimotobtw, I tested (in a very limited fashion) lua editor plugins with 020, and they seem to be working
13:12:31watusimotoI was sure I had broken them
13:12:56watusimotodebugging with vs > debugging with gdb
13:14:12raptoroh yeah - the Lua thingy
13:14:38raptorI'll want to bring over the findAllObjects() changes into the 019d branch once you're done with the
13:14:40raptor*them
13:25:09raptoractually - i found memory errors with Lua scripts in the editor... and i'm not entirely sure how to fix them
13:37:00LordDVG has joined
14:28:36watusimotowhen you say you found memory errors, you mean with valgrind?
14:29:03watusimotoit is possible to make lua scripts leak
14:36:08raptoryes
14:36:26raptorone was even a serious one 'invalid read'
14:36:48raptori mean besides the known leaks with object handling
14:37:56raptori'll get you some traces just as soon as i figure out that valgrind command again...
14:56:09raptorwatusimoto: http://pastie.org/pastes/9770566/text
14:56:35raptorThe first two have something weird to do with TNL::StringTable and setting up our global Lua enums
14:57:10raptorthe 3rd is related to the 4th and 5th which are potentially crash-inducing memory errors
14:57:29raptorsince they are invalid reads

17:20:00watusimotogeom wars looks interesting... not sure if the 3-d playfields are additive or just a distraction
17:21:09watusimotoso what do you think -- we're pushing a string that we haven't actually placed on the stack?
17:21:40watusimotoother than that, I'm not sure how we get an invalid read
17:22:01raptoran invalid read means it's attempt to access memory that has been removed
17:22:08watusimotomaybe pushing a pointer that hasn't been intialized? if so we could go via string class to ensure that never happens
17:22:11raptoror at least lost ahold of
17:22:24raptorso like deleting an object then attempting to access a member from it
17:22:47watusimotowell, you have a stack trace, so we can work through and see where it might be coming from
17:23:09watusimotowe might be able to resolve by passing copies of things like strings
17:23:14raptoryes... and i've gone over it and got lost
17:23:21raptoralthough admittedly it was later at night
17:24:12watusimotowell, I can review tonight. the traces don't look too deep
17:24:31watusimotoassuming I don't fall asleep early yet again, that is
17:24:31raptorit was less about being deep and more about chicken-egg scenarios
17:24:39watusimotoI see
17:25:04watusimotowell now that we are working on a common code base again, hopefully we can be more cooperative :-)
