13:18:25watusimotohello!

13:19:08raptorhi
13:19:56watusimotoI designed my first 3-D part yesterday! I should have it in hand on Wed., we'll see if I got the measurements right (I don't yet have the proper tools so I made do with a tape measure)
13:19:57watusimotohttps://www.tinkercad.com/things/iHRGyYeQ4t4-gear-for-doorbell
13:20:02watusimotoI feel like I joined the future
13:21:04raptorneat!
13:21:11raptorgear for doorbell?
13:21:32raptorand it's even licensed good enough for debian!
13:21:38watusimotoI have a mechanical doorbell... you turn a knob, it gears things up, and bangs some washers against the brass bell
13:21:51watusimotoloud as heck
13:21:56raptorha!
13:22:13raptorso will a plastic piece be hardy enough?
13:22:16watusimotoone of the gears wore away a groove in its "partner"
13:22:36watusimotoI figure the plastic will last about 3 months, but it will be long enough to see if I got the dimensions right
13:22:46raptorah, ok
13:22:54watusimotoif so I can either print in metal, or replace the adjacent dear with plastic
13:23:03watusimoto^^gear
13:23:17raptordoes that site let you send it to a machinist to print in metal?
13:23:23watusimotono
13:23:32watusimotobut you can send it to shapeways to print in metal
13:23:44raptorshapeways.. is a company?
13:23:53watusimotoor, if I were really adventurous, I could print in wax, and cast the part myself
13:24:06watusimotoshapeways is a printing outfit... you send them your designs, they print it
13:24:17watusimotoI could have printed in platinum for $1800
13:24:25raptorhah!
13:24:56watusimotothey have a number of metals, plastics, ceramic, "sandstone", wax, and a few other materials
13:25:06raptorit's funny to see how many of these are men: http://www.shapeways.com/superfanart/mylittlepony?li=nav
13:25:15watusimotoha
13:25:35watusimotoso my part cost $3.95 plus $5.50 shipping
13:25:46watusimotoplus 3 hours of my time figuring out how to design it
13:26:07raptorI need to know how these guys make metal parts that intricate...
13:26:15watusimotosintering
13:26:40watusimotolay down a layer of poweder, trace a laser over the layer to make it into metal
13:26:46watusimotorepeat
13:26:52raptorWHAT
13:28:08watusimotosorry
13:28:11watusimotoI was wrong
13:28:12watusimotoSteel is printed by depositing a liquid binder onto a bed of steel powder one layer at a time. The product is then removed from the printer and infused with bronze. While the product is being transferred from the printer to the infusion chamber, it exists in a delicate "green state" which does not support interlocking parts.
13:28:51raptori need to see videos of this - i've always been fascinated with doing my own metal work
13:36:31watusimotothe material I am most intrigued by is teh ceramics
13:36:31watusimotohttp://www.shapeways.com/materials/ceramics
13:37:06watusimotoooops... discontinued... repalced by porcelain
13:37:23raptorfound a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uxE_r9kEE8

13:51:23watusimotoI didn't realize they did casting too\
13:51:39watusimotoI'd think for jewlery, this would be great
13:52:18watusimotoI bought some high precision calipers last night, so I am ready to design more stuff!
13:52:29watusimotoI just need something to break, and I'm ready to go!
13:53:54raptoroh man... this is amazing - my kids could really get into this, from design to production
14:13:31raptorFelix Unger ?
14:13:46raptor(and you missed a quote mark)

16:24:14watusimotofelix unger was the fastidious character on the odd couple, a really great show from... well from a long time ago

16:49:18raptorah.. detail-oriented
17:01:07raptorthat's like muphrey's law... missing a quote in a commit while saying you were paying attention to detail? :)

17:46:24watusimotomore anal retentive than detail-oriented, but yes
17:46:40watusimotothe whole show is about room mates, one of whom is a slob, the other a neat freak
17:46:53watusimotoand the zaniness grows from that frission
17:47:31watusimotobefore it was a tv show, it was a famous play
17:47:36watusimoto(I think)
18:22:55watusimotoIn fact it was. Neil Simon.
