Forgotten Zap! levels

These levels, "The Tangle Box", "Blinding Snow" and (not so forgotten) "Curly-Q", for some reason were not included in bitfighters default levels. I'm going to make a poll to help decide weather they should be. (Wat still obviosly has the final say :))

I like the levels. I don't know why they were excluded in the first place.

Re: Forgotten Zap! levels

I think there was some attempt to avoid directly ripping off the old level pack and to give bitfighter something of its own.

Re: Forgotten Zap! levels

That makes sense. My initial guess was that there were too many CTFs. :P

Re: Forgotten Zap! levels

Most of the official levels were those released with the open source version of Zap! that Bitfighter is based on. There are a couple of other levels included to demo features (Mazeracer) or because I thought they were cool (Geowar). We cannot include any levels where the author has not given permission, and I would put the "extra" Zap levels into that category.

I have in the past suggested we come up with a new standard level collection (where the maps are a bit smaller, and, perhaps, include bots), and only Bobdaduck submitted any kind of real suggestions. I am still thinking of ways to have different "level packs" that would make switching between collections of levels easier; there are internal mechanisms for this already (think -leveldir), so it may just be a matter of UI design. In fact, in 013c? and 014 there is a new screen when you host a game, so that may be the place to let you pick a levelpack. Hmmm....

Re: Forgotten Zap! levels

Yeah, I knew it was because of legal issues.

Which is really sad, because seriously, The Tangle Box has got to be the most balanced default CTF, and possibly the most balanced CTF map I've ever played. Just my opinion, but golly do I love it.

What's the default license on intellectual property that's posted and distributed for free online with no notes from the author on ownership or distribution rights? I mean, the guy who made the map gave it away to people for free without saying what they could do with it.

Re: Forgotten Zap! levels

the real matter you should be thinking about, is do you honestly think they really care about a simple map they made over 6 years ago?

Hah, both completely legitimate points.

Especially what _k points out; Zap was free. I mean, you could buy membership (I did), but you could easily get all access to all of those maps for free.

TBH, Wat, it sounds like you should re-implement these.

Re: Forgotten Zap! levels

I don't care *at all* if people want to host these levels, play them, trade them whatever. I'm just not going to distribute them as part of an official package. Especially as we now have a totally different set of included levels that are better suited to modern Bitfighter play.

This thread may be dead but maybe the levels could be re-done?
Anyone there :?:

Actually, that's not a bad idea. Levels that feature the main elements of old levels, but in completely new formats and styles. Could be a fun map contest... hint hint

Was it a stock map?
Were there speedzones in the loops?
Could it have been the Figure Eight map by Gibbed (Rick)? viewtopic.php?f=26&t=487

If it was indeed popular then there is a good chance I have it. If you remember any details let me know... I'd love to look for it! :)
