Fancy level editing

If anyone is hankering to get a look at how I do what I do ... or just wants to catch a glimpse at my next map, or (possibly secretly) wishes to make sweet passionate love to my narrating voice, then here is a video for you:

Wow, you have way more patience than I.

I would just try to memorize it, spend ten minutes trying to hobble something together, then give up and go eat a cookie.

Tip: Hold ctrl-shift-space to disable vertex snapping.

Awseome video, by the way... it's good to see how people actually use the tools so we can make them better. One idea I've had is to add an even finer snap grid as you zoom further in. That looks like it would help you a bit.

Also... we may have bumped up the vertex limit for walls and polywalls in 019, which would make things a bit easier...

Also... I got some ideas for enhancements that may make life easier, such as an option for rescaling wall widths as you resize an object. They may not be ready for 019, but who knows?

Yeah this design took me about an hour and a half :P

Thanks, I'll try to keep that in mind.

It might, although differentiating that grid with an off-color or something would be smart. At a certain point grids inside grids inside grids could get pretty confusing.

Sure would. What'd you bump it up to?

Yeah, I was talking about that problem exactly in the video. I don't see a downside to doing that whatsoever.

Re: Fancy level editing

The new vertex limit is somewhere in the upper thousands I think

Re: Fancy level editing

The new vertex limit is bounded only by hardware.

I've tested with 16,000 verts (but you should stick to less than 1,000 on screen at a time)

Man. I know pretty much Jack All when it comes to level making. I feel so stupid not understanding all the complexities of the level editor. Do we have tutorials that are somewhat more in-depth than the in-game instructions? Perhaps one that can explain things in layman's terms?

Re: Fancy level editing

Shadow, I think Quartz's video is actually a pretty good resource, if you slow it down and take a look at the individual parts. He's got some pretty cool ideas for curving walls, for example.

But I agree! More guides from experienced level designers would be sweet, especially in video form. Less of a "tutorial" methinks, and more of a "suggestion" video that provides tips and insights. Just to see how they work their craft.

(On a side note, kaen that's awesome news. I rarely run into the vertex limit but it's nice knowing I have virtually infinite leg room.)

Anything in particular that confuses you? I could attempt to answer some questions in another video.

I once crashed my computer with too many vertexes.. it was epic

Well then. I guess we bumped it up a lot.
