Spectator Mode / Team Deathmatch

The following are just random thoughts I had while playing the Big Bitfighter Battle today. First I thought while playing team bitbash that it was interesting that in the team version, dying seems more of a bad thing to do than in single player. This could be a delusion. Following this thought I considered how cool it would be to have a team deathmatch type gametype, as is common in basically every shooter ever. This would be exactly like team bitbash except you only spawn once. However, thought I, what happens when you die? There isn't any mode besides playing, and thats a good/characteristic quality of the game. That would be my only reservation about such a gametype.

Thinking further, the most obvious state to be in after dying would be a kind of spectator mode. Even if there is no team deathmatch, I realized, a spectator mode would be a useful thing to have. It beats sitting around giving out free flags in nexus, and would be helpful for recording important events. There are two kinds of spectator mode I can think of, one where you are free to scroll around like you were a ship, but invisible and intangible. Perhaps you would be limited by barriers, but maybe not as it is important you could not interact with the game. If not, however, it would probably be important to limit how far away from the game you could wander. The other kind of spectator mode, which would be the most sensible for after death in team deathmatches, would be to view the screen of a teammate. This might be easier to implement, because you wouldn't have to worry about barriers, but maybe not.

In any case, these things would be nice but I'm not sure they are necessary. Spectator mode seems more useful. What do you think?

I think watching a teammate (or choosing a player to watch) would be pretty cool. It would also make recording from a second computer (so as not to slow your own down) possible.

Strange. I could've sworn I had seen somebody post about a spectator mode in the past, and it was denied for a reason I don't remember. It's a very vague memory and shouldn't really matter.

Anyway, I'd love a simple spectator mode, as well as TDM or even DM. Regarding spectator, you might want to consider having a zoom function, to see a larger view of a battle.

I remember someone posting something too...

As for the spectator mode as it goes, hears my idea of how it can work.
Assuming im using a keyboard to move, my normal keys are W for up, S for down, A for left, and D for right.

A and D cycles players "next" and "previous"
W and S zooms out and in.
C maps out like normal.

Simple no?

Re: Spectator Mode / Team Deathmatch

Gametypes where you wind up sitting out were rejected in the past because it sucks to have to sit out.

Re: Spectator Mode / Team Deathmatch

Or, for deathmatch, you could have a separate "waiting" zone where dead players can just fight while they wait.
The bottom statement is false.
The top statement is true.

I think that this is the best idea.

Simple to describe. Not easy to implement.

That'd be interesting - the level maker could add in a separate "ghost zone" for players who died during TDM/DM.

Right now I can run up to somebody and die immediately and be okay with it, knowing I'll respawn in just a few seconds. Add in the threat of not coming back, and choices might be made more carefully. I don't know, maybe instead of trying to create a elaborate spectator or play-while-you're-dead mode (not that I'm against either idea) we should just focus on the basics, meaning creating a simple TDM/DM gametype and seeing how people like it.

The question people are trying to answer is, what happens once you lose?

I approve of implementation of both of these features.

I support an elimination-style deathmatch. A lot.

Re: Spectator Mode / Team Deathmatch

New Game Type: Last Man Standing (old name was DeathMatch)
DeathMatch is most similar to BitMatch as compared to the other game modes.

The three main differences are this:
1. No respawn, after you die, you stay dead till the game/round is over. (it's quick-pace just like bitmatch)

2. There are a # of rounds (like boxing) It is possible to have a tie just like some of the other game types.

3. The round is over when only one player is standing (or everyone is dead [x < or = to 1]) and he or she receives 1 point for each round won. The game ends when there are no more rounds left, just like boxing without KO.

Also, there is a time limit in each round. Spectators is a good idea so that players have something to do when they are dead. Also, this game mode could be a good idea for fast games in a small tournament.

Read this first. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deathmatch_(gaming)

I don't want it to call a survivor or last man standing as a "DeathMatch", as it can confuse people who have played most other games that have a Death Match game.

Though, there is a need for Spectator, so players have something to do while waiting for "last man standing" to end.

I changed the name of the idea to Last Man Standing.

So I have to make a new thread just because the old one is locked and people just got mix up because it has a similar/same name as another thread. Do people actually read details? I broke it up into 3 simple characteristics. Who cares if it has the same name as another idea that failed/delayed, it's just a name. Whatever...such a simple game mode. Perhaps I'm the one confused or worst, everyone else is.

Re: Spectator Mode / Team Deathmatch

I think the frustration stems from the fact that you bumped a nine-month old thread and didn't really post anything new. The idea of a survivor/deathmatch/last man standing game mode is as old as time, and has been suggested multiple times.

It's fine to voice your support for a last man standing game mode, but I think you'd be better off doing that in a more active thread, like this one.
