16:17:42Zoomberhoi
16:17:49HeyubDespite their only being one hour left of it >.<
16:17:49Zoomberheyub i dont think i've met you before
16:18:04raptorit's a sad, sad week when ChumpChange is top for 'Most games played'
16:18:33HeyubLOL really?
16:19:00raptorsee the High Scores menu...
16:19:02Zoomberanyways hi
16:19:06raptorhi Zoomber
16:19:11Heyubhello zoomber
16:26:16raptorRenderwahn: hello again
16:26:57Renderwahnlo
16:27:06raptorwelcome
16:27:19raptorhow did you hear of bitfighter?
16:27:28Renderwahnhappypenguin
16:27:41raptorhooray fellow Linux user!
16:27:41Renderwahnwhat's a good time to find a server with non bot players?
16:28:08raptorHeyub: when have you been seeing the players lately?
16:28:38HeyubAround 3-4PM there are usually some
16:28:46Renderwahnwhat timezone? :D
16:28:53raptorRenderwahn: I'd say usually in the late afternoon/evenings of eastern standard time (US)
16:29:19HeyubYeah, what raptor said lol
16:29:43raptorit's been a bit quiet recently - we need to have an event soon
16:29:59Renderwahnokay, that's in the middle of the night for me
16:30:06raptorRenderwahn: what distro do you use?
16:30:13Renderwahnkubuntu
16:30:55raptorcool - i guess the ubuntu guys have finally released the 017a package, good
16:31:08Renderwahndunno, i've build it from source
16:31:28raptoroh good, an advanced ubuntu user... we like those :)
16:35:11HeyubIt would be cool if there was an activity chart, who is online is already tracked.
16:35:22raptorexplain
16:36:04raptoryou mean, like a historic calendar that shows timeframes of people online?
16:36:36Heyubhttp://store.steampowered.com/
16:36:49HeyubRight below the midweek madness section
16:37:02Heyub(a picture can say a thousand words ;) )
16:37:45raptori'm not seeing it - i only see a headline: 'Midweek Madness - Dead Space Franchise'
16:37:52raptor(i don't have an account)
16:37:55Renderwahnhttp://store.steampowered.com/stats/
16:37:59Renderwahnyou don't need one
16:38:13raptorohhhh....
16:38:22raptorhttp://bitfighter.org/gamereports/
16:38:25raptorand:
16:38:33raptorhttp://bitfighter.org/gamereports/graphs/
16:38:48raptorrudimentary, but he have some stats...
16:38:51raptor*we
16:39:09HeyubWhoa... Why arnt these on the website?
16:39:21raptorumm... they are...
16:39:24raptorsort of...
16:39:25HeyubOr am I just looking...
16:39:26Heyub:o
16:39:33raptori think i made an announcement a few months ago :)
16:39:36raptorin the forums
16:39:40Renderwahndepressing
16:39:50raptorok, yeah, i need to work on advertising these...
16:39:55Renderwahnwhy don't you have 4*10^6 users like steam? :P
16:40:02raptorhaha
16:40:38raptorwe think we have a good game, but we've never hit 'critical mass': the point at which enough people know about it that there's always a game going on
16:41:29Renderwahni can't say yet if the game is good. only played against some bots, and they were rather dumb :D
16:41:55raptorour s_bot needs work
16:42:07raptorif you know LUA, we'd accept more bots and code!
16:42:44Renderwahni'm not particularly interested in LUA or AI -_-
16:42:55raptorhehe - my problem too
16:43:30HeyubI think you mighI gotta run, cya!
16:43:42raptorlaterz
17:24:19Renderwahnlooks like it is fun with some players
17:26:22raptorwe think so :)
17:26:27raptorwe just need the players...
17:27:02Renderwahnthat's pretty much the problem of every game
17:27:13Renderwahnif it hasn't billions of advertisment behind it
17:28:27Renderwahnbawwww, there is a game with two players but it's password protected :D

19:14:17raptorHi IAmBeard
19:14:28raptorwelcome to #bitfighter
19:15:00IAmBeardhi, thanks :)
19:15:08IAmBeardi was following the project on the SDL mailing list
19:15:17IAmBeardtried it out and really enjoyed the game
19:15:49IAmBeardi have a soft-spot for 2d space shooters
19:15:51raptorgreat!
19:15:52IAmBeardthanks DOS :P
19:15:56raptorhaha
19:16:30IAmBeardi was curious, are you using a physics library, or are you doing more of a "roll it yourself" sort of thing?
19:16:33raptorif you don't mind my asking, what OS/Version do you use?
19:16:42IAmBeardwindows 7
19:17:02raptorok
19:17:10raptorlet's see... phsyics...
19:17:14raptor*physics..
19:17:56raptorwe use slightly modified form of Newton's cradle type physics. And it's definitely "roll it ourselves"
19:18:06IAmBeardbecause if you're using your own solution and wanted to switch, i've been playing with chipmunk physics for a few years now which is pretty easy
19:18:18IAmBeardbut i guess it would be hard to integrate if you already have your own working solution
19:18:23IAmBeardah, cool
19:18:47raptoryeah - our physics isn't too complicated
19:19:08raptorchipmunk physics, huh?
19:19:21IAmBeardyeah, ansi c
19:19:47IAmBeardi actually did a basic space shooter prototype a while back to play with it
19:19:59raptorhuh, the author of that rings a bell from somewhere...
19:20:07IAmBeardslembcke?
19:20:11raptoryes
19:20:13IAmBeardyeah, he's here and there on the internet
19:20:18IAmBeardand he's a good guy
19:20:31IAmBeardi had some of his help porting chipmunk to a different language
19:21:16raptorah ha! he was the guy who helped me with a patch on Mac +SDL once
19:23:22IAmBeardyeah, sounds like him
19:24:16raptorwell cool - i was secretly hoping my post to SDL development list might generate more players :)
19:26:10IAmBeardi actually saw this project a while back, but it was right before i had moved from my old apartment and I sort of lost track of the name of the game :P
19:29:00IAmBeardwhen i gave it a run last night, i was quite surprised at how polished it was
19:29:20IAmBeardmost of the games posted on the mailing list are sort of crappy and not really appealing to me
19:29:26raptoryeah me too
19:29:32IAmBeardbut I guess that's a matter of taste *shrug*
19:29:51raptorwe think we have lots of potential, we just have a small user base
19:30:47IAmBeardoh, i can help out a bit with that - I do semi-regular lan parties, so I'll introduce this into the roster
19:31:17raptorgreat!
19:31:40raptorwe like to have a competition of sorts ever couple months.. we call it a 'BBB' Big Bitfighter Battle
19:31:53IAmBeardyeah, i was reading about that on the site :)
19:32:07IAmBeardso, it looks like you gents need some dev help, yeah?
19:32:15raptoralways! :)
19:32:25IAmBeardwhat are you using for the website? rails? php?
19:32:28raptorthere are three of us main developers
19:32:36raptorphp mostly
19:33:06raptortwo of us are fathers who hobby-develop :)
19:33:24IAmBeardif you give me about two weeks (i'll try and be regular on here, too), i could develop a rails based website for you - and I could possibly look into helping you integrate your game and website together
19:33:36raptoroh yikes
19:33:46raptori'd talk to watusimoto (the lead developer)
19:34:05IAmBeardfor instance, press something like f11 in game, and boom, auto-upload to your website's screenshot gallery
19:34:13raptorhe put most the site together
19:34:15IAmBeardsure, when is he usually on?
19:34:21raptoralthough i've done a lot of the update work
19:35:08raptorhe is in Luxemburg, so usually from the morning until 6pm EST
19:35:36raptorI'll admit i don't know much about Ruby
19:39:14IAmBeardwell, to tell a secret, i'm more of a php guy myself, but by looking at what you need your site to do, rails looks like it's a better option for you
19:40:38IAmBeardthe only downside is that rails hosting is sort of expensive; the options are either get a VM instance on amazon (expensive), find a host that supports rails and preferably ssh (still fairly expensive), or host it yourself
19:41:10IAmBeardfor me, i go the host it yourself route, which means you get the most control over the system
19:41:12raptorwe have a VPS that we've customized with config files and vi :)
19:41:28IAmBeardyeah, VPS would work great for rails
19:41:43raptori am somewhat of an IT person and can set up basically anything, so ruby wouldn't be a problem
19:42:24IAmBeardawesome possum
19:43:23IAmBeardah, sorry, i missed your message about being hobby devs - me too, I actually just got married a little over 6 months ago
19:43:45raptorgreat!
19:43:48raptorcongrats!
19:44:03IAmBeardthanks :)
19:44:48IAmBeardso you gents run a programming team for a bunch of stuff, or do you mostly just stick to the bitfighter project?
19:44:53IAmBeardbrb - my dog needs a walk
19:46:10raptorwe just collaborate on all things bitfighter
19:46:54raptorthe original dev, watusimoto, started it on his own about 3-4 years ago; then sam686 and myself got hooked about 1.5 years ago and joined on
19:47:04raptornone of us knew each other before hand
20:05:24HeyubHah thats funny... Just got back from walking my dog.
20:08:12IAmBeard:)
20:09:10IAmBeardso who are all the devs (man that sentence doesn't seem right, but i'm rolling with it)
20:10:10raptorwatusimoto (lead), sam686, and myself are The Big 3 (right now)
20:10:22raptorthen Zoomber has done some Mac work in the past
20:10:25HeyubWhoa lots of people on bitfighter
20:10:48Zoomberi am a fallen dictator
20:10:53raptorand karamazovapy has done several of the stock levels and lots of testing
20:11:05IAmBeardcool beans
20:11:25raptorkaramazovapy also usually does the contests and moderates the forums
20:11:40raptorbut he started his own business about 2 months ago and is taking a break
20:11:49raptorwe hope he comes back
20:12:42IAmBeardand do you guys have a dev roadmap for the game?
20:13:10raptoryes: http://bitfighter.org/wiki/index.php/Development_roadmap
20:13:12raptor:)
20:13:53IAmBeardthat's not much of a roadmap :P
20:14:14raptora better metric may be to look at the issues list
20:14:16raptor!bug
20:14:16BFLogBotTo enter a bug, please make sure it is reproducible and then go to http://code.google.com/p/bitfighter/issues/list | Also, see current running bug list: http://bitfighter.org/wiki/index.php/Running_Bug_List
20:14:25IAmBeardis there any time that all of you meet up as developers to discuss features?
20:15:28IAmBeardin some form of conference?
20:15:36raptorsince watusimoto moved to LU, it's been harder, but usually we do here in IRC when he's home anywhere from like 2 - 6pm EST
20:16:00raptorhe is unfortunately on a business trip i think for the remainder of the week
20:18:13IAmBeardah, okay
20:18:21raptorwe're pretty casual
20:18:31IAmBeardjust the way indie-dev should be :)
20:18:57raptorto be honest, i've been using this project as a learning/teaching tool for myself
20:19:39IAmBeardjust by looking at the game and stuff, I have a few suggestions for UX and user management
20:19:47raptorgreat!
20:19:53raptorare you a member of the forums?
20:19:58IAmBeardnot yet
20:20:18raptorthere is a 'Bitfighter Features' part of the forums that we use to keep track of stuff
20:20:34raptorbecause things tend to disappear unless written down outside of IRC :)
20:21:07raptorand if you register with the forums, you can authenticate in-game and be underlined!
20:21:25IAmBeardooooh :)
20:21:38HeyubAnd you get capital letters
20:21:42raptorhahaha
20:21:46raptorthat's a bug i need to fix...
20:22:03Heyublol :P

21:05:41IAmBeardso, the windows bfupdater is broken, it updated me to an older version =/
21:05:51raptorwhat!>?
21:05:59raptorwhat version?
21:06:07IAmBeardrelease 016
21:06:21raptoryikes
21:06:25raptorthat's bad...
21:06:33IAmBeardyup
21:07:38raptorwhy did it do that now and not before?
21:07:47raptorwhat version did you download?
21:09:01raptorlet me start a windows VM and see if it does it for me...
21:12:31raptorok, i just tested 017a... it didn't prompt for an update - maybe it happens when master server is down?
21:12:51IAmBeardno, i forced the update
21:13:24IAmBeardand it told me when i did that there was a new update, so i said okay, and it downloaded 016
21:13:42IAmBeardeven as a forced update, it should have said either i was up to date, or redownloaded 017
21:14:30raptorah - so you are trying to break bitfighter....
21:14:33raptorthis is good!
21:14:54IAmBearda good engineer likes to break things
21:14:56Zoomberhey raptor, want some retro sounds? i just discovered a jackpot of shaper effects i can make now
21:15:41raptorshaper effects?
21:15:45Zoomberwhat about one that goes, "whaaaaahahaha Teeeooowwwww" when you respawn?
21:16:36raptoruhh
21:17:03raptori'm having a hard time wondering what that would really sound like...
21:17:17Zoomberi was sort of joking, but i could actually get somewhere
21:17:22Zoomberill record the joke one
21:19:24Zoomberwhat file formats best for you>
21:19:48raptorany, i think

21:35:02sam686something might have caused it, not sure..
21:52:24IAmBeardwell gents, i'm going to sign off for now, but I'll try and be a little more regular here
